Aggie Men’s Tennis Season Ends in NCAA Second Round
May 15, 2016 | Men's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 12 Texas A&M men's tennis season came to an end Sunday afternoon at the hands of No. 18 Texas at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Tournament Second Round. The Aggie's season ended in a last-match standing third-set tie-breaker as No. 68 George Goldhoff topped No. 18 Arthur Rinderknech to clinch the 4-3 victory for the visiting Longhorns. With the setback, the Aggies finished the season 27-10, the second most wins in a season under Head Coach Steve Denton and fourth-most in program history.
The Maroon and White stormed back from a 3-1 deficit to even the match at 3-all, focusing everyone's attention to the top court. Rinderknech held a pair of advantages in the final stanza, but was unable to capitalize on the momentum, letting Goldhoff get back into the match twice. The Paris, France native led 3-0 in the final set and nearly broke serve to take a 4-0 lead, but a no-ad point escaped him. In the tie-breaker Rinderknech held a 4-1 advantage, but dropped five consecutive points to trail 6-4, eventually falling 7-5 in the tiebreaker.
Texas claimed the first three singles matches to take the 3-1 advantage, Michael Riechmann topped Jackson Withrow 6-4, 6-4 on court five to knot the match at 1-1. Not too long afterwards Adrian Ortiz doubled the Burnt Orange point tally with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over No. 52 Shane Vinsant on court two. Texas claimed their largest advantage at 3-1 via Harrison Scott's 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 triumph over Jordi Arconada on court three.
Despite the deficit, Texas A&M steadily played its way back into the match winning a couple points to even the team score. Senior Harrison Adams was victorious in his final match in maroon and white, topping Rodrigo Banzer 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 on court four. Junior Max Lunkin outlasted Julian Zlobinsky 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 on court six, leveling the match.
The Aggies and Longhorns were all set to showdown Saturday afternoon, but Mother Nature had other plans, forcing multiple delays and pushing the remainder of the match to Sunday. Texas A&M claimed the doubles point Saturday against Texas, followed by nearly a complete first set on each singles court.
With the team season concluded, Rinderknech and Vinsant will await the NCAA Singles Championship in Tulsa, Okla., while Rinderknech and Withrow will compete at the Doubles Championship. The draw for NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will be available on Tuesday, May 24.

Texas A&M Head Coach Steve Denton Quotes
On the match …
"It was a rollercoaster ride, it looked like after we won the doubles point yesterday like we had some momentum and then the rain delay. After the delay they came out and hit us in the mouth and got way ahead and we were able to battle our way back into the match today. They just came up with the shots at the end, I thought George [Goldhoff] was a little bit more aggressive, certainly at the end of the tiebreaker than Arthur was and that was the difference."
On coming back to tie the match at three-all…
"We got down 3-1 and Harry came through for us. He got on top and started winning some off the key points in second and third sets. He won some three-all points which he was not doing in the first set and then Max hung in there and stayed the course. I knew it was going to be a close match it didn't shock me it was a 7-6 in the third last match on. That seems to be how we play these matches against a lot of teams especially when so much is on the line and the fact that we are playing to go to Tulsa. Everything was heightened and our guys gave their best effort, Texas just played a little bit better today."
