No. 16 Texas A&M advances in NCAA Lafayette Regional with 9-3 win over Texas
May 21, 2016 | Softball
LAFAYETTE, La. – The 16th-ranked Texas A&M softball team powered its way past Texas, 9-3, on Saturday in the Aggies' second elimination game of the day at the NCAA Lafayette Regional at Lamson Park.
"I am really proud of our ball club in the way we played today," head coach Jo Evans said. "Yesterday was a disappointing day for us. We just didn't have our mojo going. It surprised all of us a little bit. For us to come out today and play with enthusiasm and great energy, I am really pleased with that. We were able to be aggressive and keep attacking. I thought it was a great team win. All throughout the lineup, you saw kids stepping and helping us win."
Texas took an early 1-0 lead, scoring an unearned run in the second on an Erin Shireman sacrifice fly to left, scoring Reagan Hathaway.
The Aggies countered in the third, scoring three runs on three hits. Freshman Kaitlyn Alderink and sophomore Tori Vidales led off the inning with back-to-back singles and were moved into scoring position on a sophomore Ashley Walters sacrifice bunt. After senior Cali Lanphear walked to load the bases, freshman Samantha Show roped a double off the wall in left, clearing the bases.
The Longhorns evened the game in the bottom half on a two-run homer to center from Holly Kern, but the Aggies responded with two runs in the fourth on a Vidales two-RBI single up the middle.
Texas A&M added to its lead in the sixth as Alderink singled to right field, driving in sophomore Erica Russell, before Walters plated Milligan on a sacrifice fly.
In the seventh, Russell doubled in freshman Riley Sartain, before scoring on a Milligan liner up the middle as the Aggies extended their lead to 9-3.
Show tossed her second complete game of the day, giving up four hits, three runs, two earned with five strikeouts.
For the day, Show went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, four RBI, three walks, while throwing 14 innings with seven hits and 13 strikeouts.
"It is huge for us and huge for our program, because she is the future of our program," Evans said of Show. "She has the potential to do what she did today on a consistent basis. What has happened this year is she is trying to learn how to be consistent and trust her teammates. When she is on offensively, it makes her a better pitcher."
The Aggies will return to action Sunday at 3:30 p.m. against Louisiana-Lafayette with game seven of the regional slated for 6 p.m., if necessary. Coverage of the game can be heard locally on KWBC 1550 AM or online at www.RadioAggieland.com. TV coverage of the game can be seen on ESPNU.
