EUGENE – Texas A&M junior Lindon Victor added another postseason honor to his collection prior to starting the NCAA Championship decathlon on Wednesday. This week he was named USTFCCCA South Central Field Athlete of the Year while Aggie assistant coach Kris Grimes earned South Central men's Assistant Coach of the Year accolades.
Following his SEC Championship winning performance of 8,446 points, which is the fourth best score in collegiate history, Victor was selected as the SEC Field Athlete of the Year and named to the Bowerman watch list.
Victor was also one of eight male athletes who train with Coach Grimes to reach the NCAA Championship weekend. A trio of Aggies advanced in the pole vault and triple jump. The vault crew includes Chase Wolfle, Carl Johansson and Jacob Wooten while the triple jump squad includes Latario Collie, Lathone Collie and Jeffrey Prothro. Also advancing in the long jump was Will Williams.
The NCAA decathlon field at Hayward Field includes six athletes who have scored over 8,000 points, led by the collegiate-leading score of 8,446 by Victor, who currently ranks second on the 2016 world list. Action will begin at 10:30 a.m. (CT) with a webcast available on ESPN3 through the WatchESPN app and live results available at www.flashresults.com.
Among the group of 8,000 point scorers is two-time NCAA defending champion Maicel Uibo of Georgia, who has produced scores of 8,356, 8,326 and 8,315 the past two seasons, as well as last year's runner-up in Arizona's Pau Tonnesen, who scored 8,247 last season.
The other decathletes who have surpassed 8,000 points this season include another pair from Georgia in Devon Williams (8,116) and Karl Saluri (8,108) along with Wisconsin's Zach Ziemek (8,047).
Victor has already established the collegiate all-time best in the decathlon discus with his mark of 179-0 at the SEC Championships. The best discus throw in a NCAA decathlon is 167-3 set by Mike Ramos of Washington in 1986.
In addition to the start of the decathlon, Wednesday's action includes finals in the following men's field events for the Aggies: pole vault, javelin, and long jump. Running semifinals for Texas A&M take place in the 4x100 relay, 400m, 800m, 400m hurdles and 4x400 relay.
Ioannis Kyrias is the collegiate leader in the javelin with a throw of 268-7 this season while Fred Kerley tops the collegiate ranks with a 45.10 in the 400m. The Aggies will have the duo of Hector Hernandez and Donavan Brazier in the 800m along with Robert Grant in the 400m hurdles and Williams in the long jump. Wolfle equaled the Texas A&M school record of 18-6 ¼ in the pole vault and is tied for second best among collegians this season.
