Aggies Capture Marquette Intercollegiate to Post Third Straight Win
Oct 03, 2017 | Men's Golf
HARTFORD, Wisc. – Continuing its torrid start to the 2017-18 campaign, the top-ranked Texas A&M men's golf team won its third straight tournament Tuesday by claiming an 11-stroke victory at the Marquette Intercollegiate.
"These guys were amazing today," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "Erin Hills was tough - the greens were dried out, firm and fast and the wind was howling. We didn't have our best stuff early and we got off to a rough start, but they kept it together and had a great back nine to pull away and win again. Eight-under on the home stretch of a U.S. Open course is great golf and I could not be more proud of this effort."
As they did in each of their previous two events of the season, the Badger Invitational (Sept. 10-12) and the OFCC Fighting Illini Invitational (Sept. 15-17), the Aggies stood atop the team leaderboard after 54-holes to claim victory at this week's event, which took place at Erin Hills Golf Course, the site of the 2017 U.S. Open.
The three-tournament winning streak stands out as a school record for the program.
Texas A&M (293-287-286=866, +2) sealed the victory by tallying the lowest team score of the day Tuesday, producing a four-man total of two-under par during the final round. UCLA (+13), Marquette (+15), Florida State (+23) and Michigan State (+30) filled out the top five schools at the 15-team event.
Sophomore Josh Gliege (75-71-68=214, -2) stood out as the top Aggie on the leaderboard, carding a 68 on Tuesday to climb nine spots in the standings and finish with a career best tie for third. The Eagle, Idaho, native now has produced back-to-back top-10 showings after notching a fourth-place showing at the OFCC Fighting Illini Invitational.
Junior Chandler Phillips (75-70-72=217, +1) was even par during the third round to complete a tie for sixth place, giving the All-American his 16th career top-10 performance. Phillips was joined at one-over for the event by Andrew Paysse (72-73-72=217, +1), who also finished in sixth.
Rookie Reese Ramsey (71-73-84=228, +9) ended the event in a tie for 38th while sophomore Brandon Smith (76-79-74=229, +13) enjoyed his best round in Wisconsin with a 74 on Tuesday to climb 17 spots into a tie for 42nd.
"Once again it was a team effort with everyone contributing throughout the week," Higgins added. "Hats off to Josh Gliege for his great play but especially today, four-under was a phenomenal round in tough conditions. Paysse and Phillips were fantastic today as well. They were both three or four over par on the front and battled back to shoot even. Just another terrific showing."
Texas A&M men's golf is back in action Oct. 20-22 when it travels to Alpharetta, Ga., for the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate.
