Valspar Collegiate On Tap for Aggie Golf
Mar 18, 2017 | Men's Golf
PALM CITY, Fla. – The Texas A&M men's golf team is set to begin competition at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on Sunday when the three-day, 54-hole tournament at Floridian National Golf Club commences.
"The Valspar Collegiate Championship is one of the premier events of the entire year and definitely one of our favorites," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "The Floridian is an outstanding venue and the competition is loaded with great teams and players. We are really looking forward to this week."
The No. 14 Aggies will be one of 13 total teams, including eight that were ranked in the March 14 edition of the Golfstat rankings, which will vie for the team title. Included in the field is No. 23 Arkansas, No. 30 Florida State, No. 27 Georgia Tech, No. 49 Houston, No. 12 LSU, Memphis, Minnesota, North Texas, No. 33 South Carolina, No. 18 Texas, USF and No. 10 Wake Forest.
The competition course at Floridian National Golf Club will play at 71 par and 7,114 yards with a single round schedule for each day beginning with a shotgun start at 12:15 p.m. (CT) on Sunday. The Aggie contingency will be paired alongside golfers from Florida State and South Florida during the opening round.
Representing Texas A&M in the Sunshine State will be juniors Cameron Champ and Kavan Eubank, sophomores Andrew Paysse and Chandler Phillips as well as freshman Dan Erickson. Second-year Aggie Max Miller will compete as an individual.
This week, a pair of Aggie golfers received accolades as Champ was named the Co-SEC Golfer of the Week following a top-five showing at the Bandon Dunes Championship while Phillips was announced as a member of Team USA for the 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup, which will be held June 9-11 at Atlanta Athletic Club.
Phillips is coming off a runner-up showing at last season's Valspar Collegiate in which the Huntsville, Texas, native finished atop the leaderboard at two-under par with Zach Wright of LSU before falling in a tie-breaking playoff hole. Meanwhile, the Aggies finished in a tie for third as a team.
