Texas A&M Defeated by Top-Ranked Florida
Mar 06, 2017 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 20 Texas A&M women's tennis suffered a 4-0 setback against No. 1 Florida Monday at the George P Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. The Aggies (8-5, 0-2 SEC) and Gators (11-0, 2-0) were originally scheduled to face off Sunday, but inclement weather forced the match to Monday.
The Gators captured the doubles point to open the match, claiming 6-2 wins on the top two doubles courts. No. 54 Anna Danilina and Spencer Liang topped Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma on the center court followed by No. 13 Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan besting No. 14 Rachel Pierson and Rutuja Bhosale on the top court.
""I thought coming into the match that doubles was a spot where we had a chance to get a point and put them on their heels, but we got outplayed at all three doubles courts," Texas A&M women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver said. "There seemed to be a bit of a funk in the doubles, it could have been the delay, playing on a different side of the facility or the conditions that caused that. On the other hand Florida played really well in the doubles and took advantage of a couple opportunities to get that point."
Florida continued to put the pressure on the Aggies, taking four of six first sets. The visitors took a 3-0 advantage as No. 24 Danilina topped Macarena Olivares 6-1, 6-4 on court three followed by No. 10 Kuhlman defeating Gavrilovska 6-1, 6-0 on court four.
The Maroon & White threatened to get back into the match with all four courts on in the balance, but No. 91 Austin clinched the match for Florida 6-2, 7-5 over Tina Bokhua on court five.
"In the singles, in the last four matches things could have gotten interesting," Weaver added. "We had some shots to get back into the match. We were up a set on a couple courts, Rachel [Pierson] was playing close on one and Tina [Bokhua] was up late in the second set trying to force a third. Things were getting interesting there at the end, but Florida is the best team in the country. I think there were some encouraging things out there today, we were neck and neck in four singles matches so we can take some positives away from this match."
The Aggies continue SEC play at Missouri Firday evening, followed by a Sunday showdown with No. 17 Arkansas in Fayetteville.
