Jun 10, 2017 | Track and Field
EUGENE – Texas A&M women finished with 15 points to tie for 13th place in team scoring at the NCAA Championships, which concluded on Saturday at Hayward Field.
Oregon totaled 64 points for the team title over 62.2 produced by Georgia, who scored all its points in field events. The top four team finishers also included USC (43) and Kentucky (40) while the rest of the top 10 included Florida (39), Arkansas (38.2), LSU (32), Texas (32), Kansas State (25), and Arizona State (21).
The Aggies were among four teams who tied for 13th place with 15 points. Joining Texas A&M were Boise State, Stanford and Kent State.
Aaliyah Brown raced in the 100m and 200m finals, placing fourth in the longer sprint with a 22.79 (1.1 wind) while finishing seventh with an 11.21 (0.3 wind) in the 100m to score seven team points.
"Today I just wanted to come out here and represent Texas A&M as well as possible," said Brown. "I think I did that. My 100 wasn't as good, but it was still a fast final. In the 200, I wanted to finish with a bang, since it's my senior year.
"I missed having a 4x100 to run prior to my individual races, because it gets me ready and in a pattern to race. Since I didn't have that, I told my coach I wanted my warm-up to be a little more intense. That's what we did to put my legs in a 4x1 situation without being in one."
LSU's Mikiah Brisco claimed the 100m in 10.96 while Florida's Kyra Jefferson won the 200m in a collegiate record of 22.02, breaking the mark of 22.04 set in 1989 by Dawn Sowell of LSU at altitude in Provo, Utah.
Behind Brisco in the 100 were Oregon's Deajah Stevens (11.04) and Teahna Daniels of Texas (11.06). In the 200m, Oregon's Ariana Washington (22.39) was second with Havard's Gabrielle Thomas (22.61) in third.
The Aggie 4x400 squad ran 3:27.26 to place fourth and post the third-fastest time in school history. The foursome included Briyahna Desrosiers (52.8), Jazmine Fray (51.7), Glorilisha Carter (52.21) and Jaevin Reed (50.52).
Reed held off the challenge by Texas anchor Chrisann Gordon, who won the open 400m in 50.51. Gordon split 49.41 as Texas finished fifth in 3:27.27. In the 400m final, Reed placed eighth with a time of 52.61.
"After the 400m I was definitely pretty upset and disappointed," said Reed. "I tried to shake it off and focus on the next race. I knew my teammates were going to be counting on me and they needed me to finish strong in the relay."
Oregon, who needed to win the 4x400 relay to claim the team title, broke the collegiate and meet record with a 3:23.13 effort. The previous collegiate record was 3:23.75 set in 2004 by Texas while the meet record of 3:24.21 was set by Texas in 2014. USC finished second in 3:23.35 with LSU third at 3:26.99.
