Champ, Lee to Represent A&M at U.S. Open
Jun 06, 2017 | Men's Golf
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Texas A&M's Cameron Champ as well as A&M signee Walker Lee will represent the Aggie men's golf team at the upcoming 2017 U.S. Open after the pair qualified with strong performances in sectional qualifying. The duo represent two of the 14 amateurs set to participate in the 117th U.S. Open which begins June 15th from Erin, Wisconsin.
Champ participated in the US Open Sectional Qualifying in his home state of California. Champ led the loaded field with an opening round 63 and after finishing the final round in a share for the final qualifying spot, the Sacramento native sunk a birdie putt on a playoff hole against Brandon Wu to punch his ticket to the U.S. Open.
Walker Lee, who is set to join the Aggies in the fall, competed in qualifying from Lakewood Country Club in Dallas where three Open spots were up for grabs. Facing a field that included USGA champions and PGA tour winners, Lee opened with a 65 before closing with third-place finish, one shot in front of former Aggie standout Ryan Palmer, who captured the first alternate spot. The 19-year old will be one of the youngest golfers in the field.
The tandem represent the first Aggies to participate in the U.S. Open since Bronson Burgoon participated in the 2009 Open at Bethpage in New York.
The 2017 U.S. Open runs June 15-18 from Erin Hills just outside Milwaukee. Of the 8,979 golfers who attempted to qualify for the Open, 156 will tee off when play starts Father's Day weekend in Wisconsin.
