FRESNO, Calif. – The top-ranked Texas A&M equestrian team downed South Dakota State, 12-4, to complete the sweep of the opening weekend doubleheader Saturday at the Student Horse Center.
"It was good having the two meets back-to-back. Being able to see more of the girls get in there was a really good test. We are going to be tested in less than a week," head coach Tana McKay said. "That's going to help us with our lineup to see where we stand as a team as a whole as far as consistency and who will be able to handle the pressure of playing an SEC team. I'm really happy with the Hunt Seat team. They had another sweep in two events, so they were on fire."
The Aggies (2-0) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after sweeping Equitation on the Flat as junior Rebekah Chenelle opened the meet with a 92 to top Jessica Martinez's 72. Senior Maddie Swem followed with a 75-63 win against Jacey Chorlton, before senior Rachael Hake defeated Jessica Martinez, 92-86. Scoring the final point of the day, senior Alex Desiderio tied the school record for the highest scoring ride in Equitation on the Flat since 2015 while being named MOP as she defeated Taylor Duerr, 95-79.
In Reining, the Aggies went 2-2 to extend their lead to 6-2 on the day. Senior Madison Bohman led off with a 68, defeating Mariah Wright's 67. Following suit, junior Kalee McCann defeated Miranda Sullivan, 70.5-70, earning her MOP honors.
The Maroon & White continued their dominance in the Hunt Seat arena after taking Equitation over Fences, 4-0. Hake scored the first point with an 80-74 victory over Alissa Greenwald, followed by freshman Caroline Dance bettering Chorlton, 77-70. Chenelle, who was named MOP, downed Martinez 83-60 before Desiderio concluded the sweep with an 82-63 win over Duerr.
Texas A&M closed the meet tying 2-2 in Horsemanship. The Aggies won the final two points to win the meet, 12-4. Sophomore Ashley Davidson won MOP honors after defeating Wright 77-73.5. Closing out the meet, redshirt sophomore Katie Conklin outscored Nichole Zazula, 75.5-72.
The Aggies return to action for their home opener on September 29 as they take on No. 7 South Carolina to begin SEC competition. The meet is slated to begin at 11 a.m. at the Hildebrand Equine Complex.
