Walker Lee Wins Inaugural Maridoe Intercollegiate
Oct 08, 2018 | Men's Golf
CARROLLTON, Texas- Texas A&M sophomore Walker Lee won the second event of his collegiate career, shooting a 4-over 214 to win the inaugural Maridoe Intercollegiate by a stroke. The Aggie men's golf team finished second at 35-over.
"Outstanding play today by Walker Lee," head coach JT Higgins said. "He really showed some guts today. He came out playing really solid from the get-go, and somewhere around the turn he realized he had a chance to win the golf tournament. He hit some quality shots for the most part, kept the ball in play and the short game was amazing today. Hats off to him, that's a great win on a really tough golf course against a really tough field."
Lee, tied with SMU's McClure Meissner through 53 holes when a lightning delay that lasted over three hours struck, had a short tap-in for par on the par 4 / 482-yard 18th to clinch the victory. Lee shot even-par 70 at the Maridoe Golf Club for the second straight day, capturing medalist honors for the first time since the Aggie Invitational in April.
The Aggies posted their best round of the tournament, a 7-over 287, to finish the tournament 35-over par and finish in the top-two for the second straight event. SMU won the tournament with a 21-over 861 at the par 70 / 7,017 yard course.
"We played so good for 14 holes today," Higgins added. "We were 4-under, and within two or three of the lead, then we hit a couple shots in the water on 15, and from there we just finished really poorly. It's great that we played 14 holes good, but they make you count all 18 of them, and we did a really bad job of finishing this week. We did have a much better approach today, the guys for the most part played pretty patient and disciplined golf we just got to be a little tougher coming down the stretch and finish these things off."
Five Aggies finished in the top 30, led by Lee. Freshman Sam Bennett tied for 18th at 13-over par, shooting a final-round 73. In two collegiate tournaments, Bennett has finished in the top-20 each time, averaging 72.83 strokes. Junior Dan Erickson moved up nine places up the leaderboard Monday with a 3-over 73, finishing tied for 20th at 14-over.
Sophomore Reese Ramsey carded a 1-over 71, shooting up 19 places up the leaderboard to tie for 24th at 15-over 225. Junior Brandon Smith finished a stroke behind Ramsey, tying for 30th at 16-over. Competing as an individual, junior Josh Gliege shot a 4-over 75 Monday, and tied for 66th at 28-over par.
The Aggies return to action October 19-21 at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate in Alpharetta, Ga.
