LAFAYETTE, La. – The third-ranked Texas A&M men's golf team captured its program-record fifth tournament title of the season Tuesday by winning the 33rd-annual Louisiana Classics with sophomore Dan Erickson notching his first individual title.
The Aggies (282+273+280=835, -29) entered the day with a seven-stroke cushion over No. 11 Illinois (281+281+281=843, -21) and pushed that lead to eight by the end of play. The final tally of 29-under matched A&M's performance in Hawai'i last week as its lowest score in the last seven seasons. A&M was also able to finally finish on top at the Louisiana Classics after six runners-up showings in their previous trips to the event.
"Another great job by the guys," Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "They were rock solid this week. The scary thing is, it could be even better; Just doing so many of the little things right and making such great decisions, playing smart golf which has proven to get us in the winner's circle. There's still a lot of areas that we can improve on and we are going to get back to work. We like this feeling and we want to keep it going."
Erickson (69-69-68=206, -10) sat two strokes back of the individual lead entering Tuesday's final round at Oakbourne Country Club. The Whittier, Calif., native rattled off six-under through his first 11 holes to jump ahead of the remainder the 84-player field. It was Erickson's first individual title in his 10th career start.
"I'm excited for Dan, it's great to get another guy in the winner's circle," said Higgins. "He played some pretty good golf this week. Lots of birdies, putting himself in position to score over and over again. 10-under is a great score on this golf course."
Junior Chandler Phillips (72-67-72=211, -5) continued where he left off last week when he won the John Burns Intercollegiate. The Huntsville, Texas, native finished with a share of fifth, giving Phillips five top-10 showings in seven events this seasons. Freshman Walker Lee (69-72-71=212, -4) topped his previous best finish by wrapping up play in a share of sixth. Sitting one back, Andrew Paysse (73-71-69=213, -3) jumped 18 spots with a final round of three-under into a tie for 12th which he shared with sophomore Josh Gliege (72-66-75=213, -3).
Competing as an individual, sophomore Brandon Smith (78-68-71=217, +1) finished in a tie for 30th.
"Top to bottom, all six guys played really well," added Higgins. "All six were in the top 30, and everybody had at least a round or two under par which added up to a great score at the end. I can't say enough about these guys and the job they're doing. They are working hard and more good things are coming along the way."
Next up, the Aggies make the trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., for the General Hackler Championship at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club. The event tees off from with 36 holes on March 10 before wrapping up the following day.
