MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The second-ranked Texas A&M's men's golf team wrapped up play at the General Hackler Championship on Sunday, finishing as runner-up at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
"The guys are pretty disappointed we couldn't get the victory." Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. "They battled their tails off but came up a little bit short."
Texas A&M (281-290-282=853, -11) came into Sunday's final round trailing eighth-ranked Georgia Tech (283-284-281=848, -16) by four strokes. The Aggies pulled to within one-stroke during the middle of action but the Yellow Jackets were able to pull away with a seven-under day. The finish marked the seventh time in eight events this season where the Aggies have finished in the top two.
"We couldn't get much momentum," added Higgins. "Every time things would start to go our way we'd three-putt or make a bad bogey that derailed things. We cut the lead to two with three to go but a Georgia Tech hole-in-one put us down by four and we started to need to hit birdies to try to catch up or hope they would make a mistake. We played hard and Georgia Tech played a terrific three days of golf. In reality, the finishing holes of the second round was what got us. We gave away too many shots and weren't able to make it up today."
Sophomore Dan Erickson (80-67-68=216, +3) led the Aggies in the event, finishing with a share of fourth place. The Whittier, Calif., native concluded play three strokes back of tournament champion Chris Petefish (72-68-69=209) of Georgia Tech. The showing gave Erickson three top-five finishes in four events.
Chandler Phillips (72-73-69=214, -2) jumped seven spots on Sunday into a tie for 12th with a three-under performance. The junior has carded par or better in 18 of 24 rounds and is averaging 70.58 strokes per round. One stroke back, sophomore Josh Gliege (73-73-69=215, -1) and senior Andrew Paysse (68-74-73=215, -1) both ended their time in South Carolina with 15th-place showings. All six competing Aggies tallied top-third showings, including freshman Walker Lee (72-72-75=219, +3) who brought home a share of 31st.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Brandon Smith (71-71-71=213, -3) carded a one-under in every round to finish with a share of seventh, tied for his best collegiate placing. Smith was the only one of the 84 participants to play every round under par.
"Great job by everybody," added Higgins. "Five out of the six guys finished in the top-20. They had good scores throughout the week, really good effort finishing second out of 15 teams. Have to go home and get ready for the following week, facing another solid field."
Next up, the Aggies will travel back to the Atlantic Coast, this time for the Floridian Invitational on Sunday, March 18.
