Aggie Women’s Tennis Upsets No. 17 Volunteers
Mar 02, 2018 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M women's tennis team claimed its first ranked win of the 2018 season with a 4-1 triumph over No. 17 Tennessee Friday evening at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The Aggies improved to 10-1 on the year and 1-0 in SEC play while the Volunteers (12-1, 0-1) suffered their first set back of the spring.
The Aggies won two of three doubles matches to earn the first point of the night. No. 56 Ariadna Riley and Katlin Staines remained undefeated and gave Tennesse the early edge with a 6-4 win over Tatiana Makarova and Macarena Oliveras on court 2, but within moments of each other, courts one and three finished with A&M coming out on top, Domenica Gonzalez and Eva Paalma earned a 6-3 win on court one over Sadie Hammond and Gabby Schuck followed by a 6-4 win by Dorthea Faa-Hviding and Riley McQuaid over Tenika McGiffin and Elizabeth Profit on court three. Faa-Hviding and McQuaid improved to 5-0 this spring in doubles action.
No. 97 Gonzalez maintained her impressive play against the Volunteers, winning 6-1, 6-0 over Sadie Hammond on court one to increase the Texas A&M lead to 2-0. Gonzalez leads the Aggies with 11 wins this spring against zero defeats, all on court one.
Just a short time later, Olivares pushed the Aggies ahead 3-0 with an impressive 6-3, 6-0 win on court two over Riley. Olivares improved to 10-1 in singles play this spring, all on court two. Additionally, the right hander became the first Aggie to 20 wins this year after earning 10 tournament wins last fall.
Tennessee picked up a 7-6, 6-4 win by Staines on court six over Faa-Hviding to attempt to get back into the match. The Orange tinted momentum was short lived as Makarova clinched the win for the Aggies on court four, Makarova bested Schuck 7-5, 6-4 to seal the win for the home team.
A&M improved to 8-6 in the all-time series against Tennessee, and 4-3 in matches played in College Station. The Aggies remained perfect (5-0) against the Volunteers since joining the SEC in 2012-13. Last year, 21st-ranked A&M shut out 23rd-ranked Tennessee, 4-0, in Knoxville.
The Aggies will return to action against SEC preseason-favorite and 10th-ranked Georgia at 5:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Center. The match is scheduled for Sunday, but may potentially be moved to Saturday evening due to inclement weather in the forecast. Last year, A&M picked up its highest ranked victory in program history and it's first-ever win against the then-No. 2 Bulldogs with a 4-2 triumph in Athens to close out the regular season. First serve against the Bulldogs is slated for 12 p.m., and the first 100 fans will receive free popcorn.

On starting SEC play with a win…
"It was an excellent way to start the SEC season, we have had this one marked on the schedule for a while. We knew that Tennessee had a very good team this year and a lot of the way we have made our schedule, from starting early in Hawaii to playing double headers, that this would be a big match for us. We know that they are a quality opponent coming in ranked 17th. It was no surprise to me that we would play well today. I knew we would play well, you never know if you will win, but I knew we would come out and play quality tennis."
On the match…
"We came out with some key points to get the doubles point to start the match. We really took it to them early in the singles matches. To Tennessee's credit, they fought really hard at the end and made it difficult for us to close out the match. Getting the doubles point was key and then Domenica and Macarena picked up quick wins to help put a lot of scoreboard pressure on them. Eva, Riley and Dorthea were all fighting at the end of the match, but it was really impressive for Tatiana to get the clinch in her second college tennis match against the No. 17 team in the nation."
On Domenica Gonzalez' day…
"She really was on fire today, she has had a really great season so far this spring. She has a lot of confidence and hasn't lost a match yet. For someone who had foot surgery this past summer and hardly played at all this fall it is really a lot of credit to the level of player that she is. She is a very talented player and she is on a roll, hopefully that will continue on because she is playing some really good tennis."
On Macarena Olivares' day…
"Things were tough early on for Macarena, she was hitting a lot of short balls early on allowing her opponent to dictate the match. We made a really good strategic change to play the ball deeper and she reeled off nine straight games to win her match."
On playing Georgia…
"Georgia is a really good team, they are loaded and are picked to win the league and made the semifinals of the National Indoors a couple weeks ago. They are team stocked full of talent, but it is a home match for us and we are going to come out an take our shots against a really good team. We tend to rise to the occasion and give the best teams a real tough match."
