Women’s Golf Wins Bruzzy Challenge; Szeryk Takes Home Individual Title
Apr 03, 2018 | Women's Golf
CARROLLTON - Texas A&M women's golf won the inaugural Bruzzy Challenge on Tuesday, shooting a final-round 316 at Maridoe Golf Club to win the 15-team event by two strokes over Iowa State and Houston. This marks the first time since the SEC Championship season of 2015 that the Aggies have won at least twice in the same season.
Maddie Szeryk picked up the third tournament win of her career by shooting an even-par 216, winning medalist honors by four strokes over Greta Bruner of TCU. Szeryk shot a final-round 74 (+2), to find the winners' circle for the first time since March 15, 2017.
"What a tough day, that was one of the hardest days I've had coaching in a long time," said Texas A&M head coach Trelle McCombs. "We started off super-tight and got in our own way from the get-go. Then we started settling in and just hanging in there until the end," added McCombs. "I'm so proud of their resilience and ability to keep their head in the game and finish."
The Aggies finished the event with a 43-over 907 on the par 72 / 6,336 yard course.
Freshman Ariana Saenz shot a 7-over 223 to tie for fourth, both of which were career-bests. She finished the tournament with a 9-over 81 in the final round. Freshman Amber Park tied for 29th, shooting a 17-over 233 for the tournament after a third-round 80 (+8). Sophomore Courtney Dow tied for 34th after closing the tournament with a 9-over 81 and carding a 235 (+19) for the event.
Freshman Elizabeth Caldarelli shot a 15-over 87 on Tuesday, and finished 80th with a 258. Competing as an individual, junior Chloe Velasco shot a 13-over 85 in the final round and finished tied for 67th with a 245.
The Aggies complete their regular season April 9-10 at the Dale McNamara Invitational at the Tulsa (Okla.) Country Club.
