Aggie women’s tennis lands third blue chip recruit

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver has added another blue chip recruit to his stellar 2018 recruiting class as he announced the signing of Jessica Anzo of Temecula, California.
Anzo, No. 25 on TennisRecruiting.net's list of top recruits, becomes the third blue chip athlete from the 2018 class to sign with the Aggies. Jayci Goldsmith, a two-time defending Texas high school Class 5A state singles champion from Dripping Springs, and Katya Townsend of Coconut Creek, Florida, also are graded as blue chip recruits, the highest rating bestowed by TRN.
"We are extremely delighted to announce that Jessica Anzo will be joining our team this fall," Weaver said. "The recruiting process definitely took some twists and turns for both Jessica and us. At the end of it all, we couldn't be happier to add a player of Jessica's caliber to our tennis team. Anytime you can bring in three blue chip American recruits, plus our Australian recruit, Renee McBryde, who would be nothing less than a fourth blue chip recruit, really speaks to the great product that we have in Texas A&M."
Anzo originally signed with Oregon but was granted a release after the Ducks underwent a coaching change.
Anzo, a graduate of Chaparral High School in Temecula, was the ninth-ranked tennis player in the class of 2018 from California last fall. She recently won the singles title at the Oracle ITA Summer Circuit in Wichita, Kansas.
In 2016, Anzo advanced to the quarterfinals at the USTA National Selection Tournament. She also earned a berth in the USTA National Winter Championships round of 32.
She continued her stellar tournament play at the 2017 USTA International Spring Championships, making it to the round of 16. In the USTA girls' 18 National Championships, Anzo made it to the round of 64 in singles play and to the round of 16 in doubles play.
Weaver, whose recruiting class was No. 2 in TRN's spring rankings, loses three seniors—Domenica Gonzalez, Macarena Olivares and Eva Paalma—from the 2018 season in which the Aggies made a 19th consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament and finished 17-11 after advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Dorthea Faa-Hviding, Iulia Ivascu, Tatiana Makarova and Riley McQuaid will return for their 2018-19 sophomore campaigns.
