COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 9 Texas A&M Aggies look to start 4-0-0 for the seventh time in program history and the third time in the last five seasons as they battle the San Diego Toreros at Ellis Field on Sunday. Match time is slated for 6 p.m.
Texas A&M is riding high after starting with three consecutive shutouts, outscoring opponents 9-0. The Maroon & White boast a school-record 18-match unbeaten streak with their last loss coming at Auburn (0-1) on September 15, 2017.
It marks just the second time in school history the Aggies have started the season with three consecutive shutouts with the other coming in 2006. If Texas A&M blanks San Diego it will mark the first time in school annals the Maroon & White opened a campaign with four clean sheets.
Texas A&M is one of 10 teams to make it through their first three games of 2018 without yielding a goal. The Aggies and Florida State are the only two among the 10 teams to score nine or more goals in the three shutouts.
An early hallmark of the 2018 Aggies is strong finishes. The Maroon & White have scored four of their nine goals in the last five minutes of a half. The tally includes one goal in the final five minutes of both halves of the 2-0 win against BYU
The Aggies are 2-2 all-time against the Toreros. San Diego won the initial meeting, 5-3, in College Station in 1996. Six years ago, Texas A&M dropped a 1-0 decision in San Diego in the second match of the 2012 campaign. In 2013, the Aggies thumped the Toreros, 6-1, keyed by Kelley Monogue's two goals. Last season, Texas A&M won a road match, 2-0, with goals by Haley Pounds and Jimena López.
In their second season under Coach Louise Lieberman, the Toreros are 1-1-1 on the year. USD started the year at a tournament in Blacksburg, Virginia, tying host Virginia Tech (0-0) and dropping a 1-0 decision to Georgia. San Diego notched a 2-0 win at Sam Houston State on Friday night with goals by Maddie Marotta and Milan Moses.
The Toreros were picked fourth in the West Coast Conference preseason coaches' poll with senior forward Summer Mason earning Preseason All-WCC recognition.
Video streaming for the match is available worldwide on SEC Network+ with David Ellis (play-by-play) and Jeff Given (color analyst). The match may be heard on The Zone 102.7 and RadioAggieland.com. Live stats are available on tamustats.com.
