Women's Golf Edged By Michigan At East and West Match Play Challenge
Sep 17, 2018 | Women's Golf
ANN ARBOR, Mich.- The Texas A&M women's golf team dropped a hard-fought match to Michigan, 3-2 at East and West Match Play Challenge Monday.
"We played a very close match today, and felt we had the momentum to win, but with match play you never know," said Andrea Gaston, who is making her first appearance as Texas A&M head coach after winning three national titles at Southern California. "Our team really put on a great fight and showed a lot of heart. This tournament is a great kickoff to our season, and will help us determine our preparation for our next event."
Ava Schweinteck and Courtney Dow both won points for the Aggies at Radrick Farms Golf Club, the Wolverines' home course, and Elizabeth Caldarelli and Amber Park took their Michigan opposition to the 18th hole in two other matches.
Schwienteck, a sophomore transfer from UT Arlington playing in her first event as an Aggie, won her match 5 and 4 over Alisa Synder, jumping out to a 5 up lead after just six holes, and never trailing in her match. Schwienteck clinched victory with a birdie on the fifth hole, a 467-yard par 5.
Dow also posted a 5 and 4 victory, defeating Ashley Lau on the par 72 / 6,292 yard course. After having the match all square through five holes, Dow won three straight holes to take a lead she would not relinquish.
Caldarelli was never more than 2 down in her match, and led early in the match, but the Wolverine's Sophia Trombetta won the 18th hole to prevail. Michigan's Ashley Kim, who was down three holes through six to Park, won three of the last four holes to come back and win the match.
"It came down to our anchor match with Amber Park," added Gaston. "Down the stretch her opponent, Ashley Kim, closed with 3 birdies to decide the final outcome, so you've got to tip your cap to her."
In the individual consolation, Chloe Velasco won 5 and 4 over Vivian Lee of Iowa State. She faces Bobbi Stricker of Wisconsin for the consolation championship Tuesday at 8:24 a.m. CT.
The Aggies take on Wisconsin Tuesday to conclude the tournament, with the first group teeing off at 7:30 a.m. CT.
