Aggie men claim distance medley relay in Ted Nelson Invitational

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M men won the distance medley relay on Friday evening during the Ted Nelson Invitational, claiming the event with a time of 10:03.25.
The Aggies bettered UTSA (10:12.61), UT Arlington (10:17.16) and Baylor (10:17.85) with a foursome of Jon Bishop, Nathan Hite, JaQwae Ellison and Carlton Orange. It was the lone event Texas A&M contested which counts towards Saturday's team scores.
UTSA and Baylor held the top two positions after the first leg of 1,200 meters in the distance medley with Bishop splitting 3:05.58 as A&M completed the opening leg in third place. A 400m split of 47.65 by Hite moved the Aggies into second place behind UTSA.
Then Ellison (1:53.59) used the first lap of his 800m leg to move Texas A&M into the lead. Orange wrapped up the victory with a 4:16.43 split on the 1,600m anchor leg.
Team champions from Friday's session were Sam Houston on the men's side and Northwestern State on the women's side.
Sam Houston men totaled 94 points to finish ahead of Louisiana Tech (58), Northwestern State (57), Incarnate Word (56), and Louisiana-Lafayette (53) among the field of 15 teams. The Northwestern women scored 78 points to edge McNeese State (76), Sam Houston (68), Louisiana Tech (54) and Incarnate Word (49) among a field of 16 teams.
A total of nine meet records broken during the Friday session. On the track they included Sam Houston's Chris Jefferson in both the 60 (6.71) and 200 (20.85) as well as Bearkat Fabian McCall in the 60 hurdles (7.74).
In field events, meet records were set by Sashane Hanson of A&M-Corpus Christi as she cleared 5-10 in the high jump, Louisiana Tech's Cole Courtois in the pole vault (17-1 ¾), Jasmyn Steels of Northwestern State in the long jump (20-3 ¾), Reagan Darbonne of Northwestern State in the pole vault (13-0 ¼), Incarnate Word's Sarea Alexander in the triple jump (41-11 ¼), and Louisiana Tech's Khalil Jones in the triple jump (50-11).
Other Aggies in action during the Friday session of the Ted Nelson Invitational included Taryn Milton (seventh, 18-4 ½) and Virginia Kerley (15th, 17-5 ½) in the long jump while Falon Wilson ran 9.37 in the prelims of the 60 hurdles. Hite also competed in the pole vault, placing seventh (15-0 ¼).
