Feb 01, 2019 | Men's Tennis
DALLAS – The No. 14 Texas A&M men's tennis team fell 4-3 to Texas Tech at the SMU Tennis Complex on Friday. With the loss the Aggies fell to 3-2 on the season while the Red Raiders improved to 5-2 this spring.
The Aggies opened the match by dropping the doubles point as Texas Tech's Bjorn Thomson and Parker Wynn bested Texas A&M's Carlos Aguilar and Austin Abbrat 6-4 on court one followed by the Red Raider duo of Jackson Cobb and Tommy Mylnikov defeating A&M's Barnaby Smith and Noah Schachter 6-4 on court two.
Needing to change the momentum in the match, the Aggies pushed first sets on courts one, two and six to a tiebreaker, but were only able to claim the breaker on the top court. Tech's Thomas, ranked No. 70 in the nation, topped A&M's Schachter 6-3, 6-3 to push the Red Raiders ahead 2-0. Aggie Barnaby Smith, ranked No. 50, topped Red Raider Ilgiz Valiev 6-4, 6-2 to pull the Aggies within 2-1.
The Red Raiders added another point on the board as Parker Wynn outlasted A&M's Valentin Vacherot 7-6(8), 6-3 on court two. Aguilar, ranked No. 89, tacked on a point for the Aggies as he defeated Tech's Mylnikov 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-4 on court one, but the Red Raiders clinched the match as Franco Ribero defeated A&M freshman Alex Vedri 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-3 on court six. After the match was clinched, A&M freshman Abbrat defeated Tech's Artem Kapshuk 2-6, 7-6(5), 7-6(7) on court five.
The Aggies road trip continues through the weekend as Texas A&M travels to South Bend, Ind. to take on No. 13 Notre Dame Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT).
