Women's Golf Shoots Even Par On Final Day Of Moon Golf Invitational
Feb 19, 2019 | Women's Golf
MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Texas A&M women's golf team shot an even-par 288 in the final round of the Moon Golf Invitational Monday.
Sophomore Amber Park led the team at even-par 216, finishing a tournament at par-or-better for the third time this season. Park shot a final-round 1-under 71 on the par 72 / 6,262-yard Duran Golf Club, tying for 23rd.
"I felt like I faced adversity really well this tournament," said Park. "My putting kept the momentum going in all three rounds. I've been working hard on my short game, and it was pretty reliable this event."
The Aggies finished the tournament at 5-over 869, finishing in ninth place. UCF won the event at 15-under par.
"We had a lot of good play from the team at this tournament," said Texas A&M head coach Andrea Gaston. "Everyone counted and shot some good scored. We just needed more putts to drop to have a stronger finish."
"We still take away some positives from this tournament, especially when we've had to prepare in very difficult conditions at home," Gaston added.
Freshman Brooke Tyree matched her career-best round for the second consecutive day, firing a 2-under 70, including an eagle on the par 4 16th to finish tied for 37th at 3-over.
"My putting was really working today," said Tyree. "I made a few clutch putts to really keep my round going. The eagle on 16 really helped too. I need to clean up a few areas of my game, but overall, I felt pretty good out there."
Junior Courtney Dow and Sophomore Ava Schwienteck each finished with a 6-over 222, tied for 47th. Dow shot a 2-over 74 on Tuesday, while Schwienteck turned in a 1-over 73. Freshman Katie Finley tied for 54th at 7-over 223, shooting a 3-over 75 on Tuesday.
"I was proud of myself for scrambling well and not letting the round get away from me," said Dow. "I gave myself some opportunities, but had a hard time converting putts. I'm excited for this team and what the season has in store for us."
Sophomore Elizabeth Caldarelli had a season-best even-par 72 on Tuesday to bring her tournament total to 3-over 219. She was the top finisher among the nine golfers playing as individuals in this tournament.
"I did a really good job of keeping the ball in good positions this week," said Caldarelli, who finished 37th overall. "I never really got into much trouble and I was able to make a few long putts. It felt good to get a tournament under my belt to start the season."
The Aggies return to action February 25-26 at the Icon Invitational, hosted by Houston, at The Woodlands Country Club.
