Aggies Snuff Out Flames, 4-0
Feb 23, 2019 | Baseball
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Texas A&M Aggies registered another stellar pitching performance in a 4-0 win against the UIC Flames Saturday afternoon on Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park. The Aggies improved to 7-0 on the season.
Asa Lacy (2-0) earned the win, throwing six shutout frames, scattering two hits and three walks while fanning 10. Lacy recorded his second consecutive double-digit strikeout performance. Joseph Menefee and Bryce Miller, who retired all eight batters they faced over 2.2 innings, keyed an outstanding effort by the bullpen, which has stranded all nine inherited runners in 2019. Miller recorded three strikeouts in his 2.0 innings.
The Aggies recorded their fourth consecutive 10-plus strikeout performance, and the sixth of season. The staff also held the Flames to 1-for-10 at the plate with runners on base.
Offensively, Braden Shewmake was the deciding factor, going 2-for-3 with two triples, one run, one RBI and one walk. Jonathan Ducoff and Ty Condel had key RBI to extend the Aggies' lead.

TEXAS A&M QUOTES
Head Coach Rob Childress
On the shutout performance by his pitchers…
"I felt like we were more aggressive in the second half of the game offensively, and you know there was just moments throughout the course of the game. I told [Asa] Lacy after the game that maybe his last inning was his best. Then again, maybe the first inning was his best with being able to keep them from scoring, and to grab that momentum. The first inning was almost identical for both teams. There was plenty of moments for us to crumble on the mound, but we didn't. We made pitches when we had to, and the bullpen was outstanding. [Christian] Roa, [Joseph] Menefee, and [Bryce] Miller were fabulous. When you can pitch and play defense you got a chance every day. It doesn't matter who you're playing against and we've certainly done that in the highlight.
On Asa Lacy's determination…
"I'd say Asa would probably say he had his B stuff in command today. Much like last night, if you're going to be a guy that's going to survive in this league you've got to go out with your B stuff sometimes and find a way in. Well he found a way, and he battled his tail off. He got us through six, and with the lead, you couldn't ask for more than that. I'm very proud of his performance, he's very determined."
Junior OF Ty Condel
On his first career hit…
"It felt good. You know team wise we were a bit slow, but we got a couple runs in the late innings and ended up with the win. So the hit felt great."
On which felt better, his diving catch to save a run in the seventh or his RBI hit…
"I'd have to go with the catch. I always love to play defense behind my guys no matter what so it was fun."
Sophomore LHP Asa Lacy
On battling back to strike out hitters after getting behind in the count…
"I just had to continue to tell myself 'Let's go after them right here. Let's not get down 2-0.' We just had to continue to attack."
On getting out the first-inning jam…
"That was huge for momentum. It kept the momentum on our side and allowed us to stay in the game right there."
On struggling to find the plate in the first inning…
"I think I was a little bit amped up and once I calmed myself down [and] got through that first inning, I was able to make better pitches and more pitches consistently."
Junior SS Braden Shewmake
On the performance…
"We did a great job as a team. We started a little slow, [and] didn't really stick to an approach very much. As the game went on we got a little more aggressive and we started swinging the bat the way we know how."
On getting two triples to get out of a slump…
"The coaches are doing a great job of just instilling in everybody's head to just swing hard. Swing hard and keep your best direction and good things will happen. You just have to trust that. Like I said, I trust those guys with everything I have. Knowing that they're behind me and they're leading me in the right direction, it all worked out in the end."
