Aggies Sweep Day Two of Texas A&M Invite
Mar 02, 2019 | Softball
The sophomore stymied the Lancers' offense, retiring 10 of the first 11 batters she faced. Poynter earned her first complete-game victory of the season after recording a career-high 10 strikeouts and only allowing one hit, two walks and one run.
In game one, Lamar jumped out to an early two-run lead in the first but the Aggies responded with two of their own in the second. Both teams added two runs in the fourth, but Texas A&M plated two in the fifth before pulling away in the sixth with four runs. The Aggie offense capitalized on seven errors made by the Cardinals' defense throughout the game.
The Maroon & White's offense was led by Kelbi Fortenberry, who went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and a career-high four RBI.
Kendall Potts earned the win after allowing 10 hits, seven runs and five walks while fanning two in 6.1 innings. Poynter recorded the last two outs of the game while not allowing a baserunner.

Head Coach Jo Evans
On looking sharper in the second game…
"I thought the first game felt like a grind. Sometimes you have those games, where you expect to win. We got a little on our heels in the first inning. Kendall Potts got in some trouble and then it was a grind to get ourselves out. It took us until the fifth inning for us to get a lead but was I pleased that we didn't panic. They certainly made plenty of errors to give us opportunities, and the nice thing is that we took advantage of those opportunities. I thought it was encouraging that Kendall Potts settled and pitched much better down the stretch. I though Kayla Poynter did very good in relief."
On Kayla Poynter setting the tone in the second game…
"What she did well was throwing strikes on both sides of the plate. When a pitcher can do that, it's fun for the pitching coach who is calling pitches and setting up hitters. She attacked the strike zone early and she was able to throw her changeup for strikes. She was very effective and didn't have to throw some pitches for strikes at times. I really liked the way she moved the ball around and her presence was really good. She looked like a pitcher out there on the mound. She looked crafty and like she knew what she was doing. She understood the umpire's strike zone and pitched to it. I'm very happy with how she pitched today."
Sophomore P Kayla Poynter
On her performance today…
"I started with strikes and worked to expand the strike zone. I've been working on using my legs more. The more I've been using my legs, the faster my pitches have been."
The Aggies face off against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sunday, at 12:15 p.m. to conclude play in the Texas A&M Invite.
