Women's Golf Clinches 5-2 Win Over Texas State On Tyree’s Birdie Chip
Mar 02, 2019 | Women's Golf
BRYAN- Texas A&M's Brooke Tyree holed out a birdie chip on the 16th hole to clinch her match and a 5-2 victory for the women's golf team over Texas State in a match-play event at Miramont Country Club Saturday.
"It was a lot of fun. Miramont did a fabulous job hosting us and making both teams feel at home," said Texas A&M head coach Andrea Gaston. "Match play is an opportunity go out there and be a little more aggressive, make some more birdies, and we saw some great golf out there today."
Texas A&M's Amber Park had the day's most compelling match, coming back from 4 Down through 10 holes to win 2 Up, taking each of the last two holes from Anne-Charlotte Mora.
Tyree earned the clinching point for A&M, defeating the Bobcats' Sasiskarn Somboonsup 3&2. With Tyree 2 Up on the 16th hole, she made an uphill chip from 40 feet away for birdie, clinching the match after an attempt by Somboonsup to hole out a chip herself.
Ava Schwienteck earned the biggest win of the day for the Aggies, defeating Sean Yi Yip 6&5.
A&M's Courtney Dow and Chloe Velasco each ran their match-play record to 3-0 this season, as Dow won 5&4 over Sarah White and Velasco defeated Sachika Singh 4&3.
With the Aggies' spectacular performance, Gaston was most impressed with how the team handled themselves on the course.
"Their body language was great," added Gaston. "We talk a lot about that, the importance of staying in the game. No matter how you're playing, you've got to bounce back."
The Aggies return to action March 12-13 at the Dr. Donnis Invitational in Kane'ohe, Hawai'i.
