COLLEGE STATION –Texas A&M men's tennis team hosts No. 20 Tennessee Saturday at noon (CT) at the George P Mitchell Tennis Center followed by a 6 p.m. matchup against Incarnate Word. The Aggies enter the matchup atop the league standings at 3-0 in SEC play having won their last 17 regular season SEC matches.
"Tennessee is another very tough SEC opponent, we will have to play well against them if we are going to prevail," Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. "Both teams are coming off very physically and mentally demanding wins on Thursday night. I like the fact that we are trending upwards and getting contributions from the whole team. Every one of these conference matches is a real test and I expect that will be the case again tomorrow."
The Maroon & White return to action after capturing a thrilling last-match standing showdown against traditional SEC powerhouse, Georgia, Thursday. Freshman Guido Marson delivered a third-set victory on court six to propel the Aggies to a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs. After dropping the doubles point sophomore Carlos Aguilar evened the match at one-all followed by wins from junior Valentin Vacherot and freshman Noah Schachter to set the stage for Marson's heroics.
Texas A&M boasts four student-athletes in this week's Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Top 125 National Singles Rankings. Junior Valentin Vacherot moved up nine spots to No. 38 this week to lead the charge for the Maroon & White. Joining Vacherot in the Top 125 are No. 58 Smith, No. 120 Habib and No. 121 Austin Abbrat.
Smith is an impressive 8-1 this spring having won nine of his last 10 matches. Habib has won seven of his nine matches since rejoining the team in January. Abbrat, a freshman from Spring, Texas, has won seven of his last nine matches.
The Aggies own a 9-4 advantage in 13 matchups against Tennessee. The Maroon & White swept last season's two meetings, winning 5-2 in Knoxville before dispatching of the Vols 4-0 in SEC Tournament semifinals. A&M has defeated UIW both times the two schools have faced off, recording 6-1 wins in the 2015 and 2016 season.
Saturday's matches are the middle of a stretch of five matches in five days at the Mitchell Tennis Center for the Aggies. After host the doubleheader against No. 25 Tennessee and Incarnate Word on Saturday the Aggies will welcome No. 1 Ohio State and Prairie View A&M to town on Monday.
