Texas A&M’s Townsend Falls to Top-Seed at NCAA Championships
May 21, 2019 | Women's Tennis
ORLANDO – Texas A&M women's tennis freshman Katya Townsend fell to No. 1 Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami (FL) Tuesday in the second round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships at the USTA National Campus.
No. 52 Townsend fell 6-2, 6-0 to the top-seeded Perez-Somarriba to finish her season 25-10 overall. The Coconut Creek, Florida native earned Second Team All-SEC and All-Freshman Team honors after earning a stellar 16-7 dual record including a team-best seven wins over ranked opponents.
"Katya had a great first season for the Maroon and White," Weaver said. "I know she was disappointed that things did not go better for her today, but in the grand scheme of things she had an excellent freshman year and performed very well holding down the number one position for the majority of our season. She gained some valuable experience here at the NCAA championships and she will be better off for it as her career progresses."
