Jan 26, 2020 | Men's Tennis
COLLEGE STATION – The No. 9 Texas A&M men's tennis team swept Georgia tech, 4-0, at the 2020 ITA Kickoff Weekend at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on Sunday. The Aggies (2-0) advanced to the 2020 Oracle ITA Division I National Men's Team Indoor Championship to be held Feb. 13-17 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wisc., hosted by the University of Wisconsin.
"Last year we missed out on the National Indoors so we were very determined to not let that happen again," Texas A&M men's tennis head coach Steve Denton said. "I thought we played a really tough minded and talented Georgia Tech team. They competed really hard and gave us a great test. This win will allow us to carry on and this is an opportunity to play some of the best teams in the country. It will be great to see where we stack up."
The Maroon & White captured the first point of the day through doubles victories on courts two and three. The freshman duo of Stefan Storch and Pierce Rollins defeated Georgia Tech's Carlos Divar and Chris Yun, 6-1, before A&M's Noah Schachter and Valentin Vacherot clinched the point with a 6-2 win over Keshav Chopra and Andres Martin.
The Aggies dominated singles action, winning five of six first sets. Junior Hady Habib, ranked No. 10, posted a 7-5, 6-2 win on court three over Pablo Schelcher to push the Aggies ahead 2-0. Moments after Habib's victory, No. 27 Carlos Aguilar outlasted Cole Gromley 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 on court two. No. 3 Vacherot clinched the 4-0 A&M win with a 7-6(9), 6-2 triumph over Martin on court one.
