FORT WORTH, Texas – Texas A&M women's tennis submitted a dominant effort on the first day of main-draw singles action at the ITA Texas Regional Championships from the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center Friday. The Aggies logged seven victories, going undefeated in the Round of 64 and finishing with three additional wins in the Round of 32.
No. 1-seeded and No. 10-ranked graduate Tatiana Makarova booked straight-set victories in both of her matchups, breezing past Houston's Azul Pedemonti 6-2, 6-1, before logging a 6-4, 6-4 win over Nicole Petchey of SMU. Makarova, a native of Moscow, Russia, climbs to 3-1 in tournament action this fall and has one victory against nationally ranked opposition.
Aggie freshman Mary Stoiana recorded the most domineering performances of the day, starting things off with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Tarleton's Martha Makantasi before earning a 6-1, 6-3 rout of Texas Tech sophomore Metka Komac. Stoiana improves to 3-1 overall in tournament singles play. Elsewhere for the Maroon & White, freshman Gianna Pielet made her much-anticipated debut and came away with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Emma Aucagne of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
One of the final players on the courts Friday, A&M senior Jayci Goldsmith dismantled Lucie Devier of North Texas in a 6-2, 6-1 triumph, but ran into significant opposition in the round of 32. Facing Texas Tech standout Kailey Evans, Goldsmith battled for a 6-4, 6-7(3), 1-0(9) win in one of the most tightly contested matches of the afternoon. The Dripping Springs, Texas, native made her season debut Friday.

On A&M's dominant showing Friday…
"Overall, it was a good day for us since we went 7-1. Our last two matches came down to super-tiebreakers and once a match gets to that point, it could go either way. We were able to get a win in one but not the other. With the limited draw size, everyone in the tournament is a very high-level player. We definitely have to bring it every single point, especially given the match format. We are looking forward to tomorrow and another day of some very high-level competition. I'm also looking forward to getting the doubles portion of the event going."
