Texas A&M University/Verizon Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Aggie senior diver Jesse Even and Aggie women's volleyball player Jenna Moscovic were named the Bill Erwin Scholar-Athletes of the Year at the 13th annual Texas A&M University/Verizon Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet held Monday in the Kyle Field Zone Club on the Texas A&M campus.
Even, a senior from Willis, Texas, reached the NCAA Diving Championships all four years and earned five All-America citations for his athletic efforts. He finished in the top three of all three diving events at the 2000 Big 12 Championships. Academically, Even will receive his undergraduate degree in biomedical science in May. He carries a 3.57 GPA into his final semester at Texas A&M. He has been accepted to medical school at the University of Houston and will begin course work this fall. In addition to being a leader in athletics and academics, Even has taken a leadership role in community service. He is currently serving as co-chairman of Aggie Athletes Involved (AAI) and serves as a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Moscovic, a senior from Stockton, California, has earned four letters as a setter on the nationally ranked Aggie volleyball team and helped lead the squad to its second Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Championships. Moscovic earned first-team All-America accolades from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), becoming only the second Aggie in A&M volleyball history to earn such an honor. The most highly decorated setter in A&M history, Moscovic was a three-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 squad and earned Verizon Academic All-District VI honors as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for posting better than a 3.2 GPA in accounting.
A total of 306 student-athletes and support staff were honored for posting a 3.0 grade-point or better in a semester for the 2001 calendar year. Of those, 34 posted a perfect 4.0 grade-point in at least one semester.
Seth McKinney, a senior center on the Aggie football team, was presented the male Distinguished Letterman Award. McKinney, from Austin Westlake High School, was selected in the third round of the NFL draft this past weekend and was a first-team Verizon Academic All-America as selected by CoSIDA. He was the 2001 Bill Erwin Scholar-Athlete Award winner.
The female Distinguished Letterman Award went to senior Melissa Gulli of the women's track and field and cross country teams. Gulli, who attended Klein High School in Spring, Texas, is the most successful female distance runner in Texas A&M history. She earned All-America honors in cross country, indoor and outdoor track in the same school year (2000-01).
These two student-athletes were honored for their team contributions, leadership and academic efforts.
Two members of the Texas A&M University faculty, Keith Swim, a lecturer in management, and Michael Wilkins, an Associate Professor in Accounting, were cited for their efforts to inspire students to grow, learn and achieve new heights during their academic careers.
