Jul 28, 2023 | General
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M Athletics Staff Writer Thomas Dick earned a trio of writing awards in the College Sports Communicators' annual Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest, the organization announced.
Dick, who joined the Athletics Communications staff in 2012 but was in his first year as the department's staff writer in 2022-23, posted CSC District 6 wins in the "Coach/Administrator Profile" and "General Feature" categories and took runner-up honors in the "Athlete Profile" category.
"Thomas is a gifted story-teller, and he has excelled in his enhanced role as the department's staff writer," said Assistant Athletics Director Brad Marquardt, who oversees Athletics Communications. "Texas A&M Athletics has so many stories that deserve to be told, and Thomas and his writing group of students produced over 30 pieces of original content for 12thMan.com in its first year. Thomas does a tremendous job of identifying interesting stories and creating compelling content."
For his winning Coach/Administrator Profile, Dick told the story of Texas A&M's popular Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Paul Batista and his journey from serving as a county judge in rural Burleson County to being asked to join the SEC Executive Council 30 years later in "Putting Student-Athletes First."
Dick's winning effort in the "General Feature" category, "The Grass Was Always Greener in Aggieland," was a celebration of long-time fields manager Craig Potts on his retirement after 27 years of making sure Texas A&M's athletics playing fields were the envy of his peers.
For the runner-up honors in "Athlete Profile," he did a deep dive into the world of Henry Coleman III from the men's basketball team with "Always Learning, Always Leading." The feature focused on the impact of an athletics scholarship and the opportunity of being a student-athlete at Texas A&M.
