Texas A&M Closes Out SMU Classic with Top-Five Finishes

DALLAS – The Texas A&M swimming & diving team wrapped up competition at the SMU Classic Saturday afternoon at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center. The women's squad placed third with 293 points on the weekend, while the men's team earned a fifth-place finish with 233 points.
The 200 medley relay started things off on day two and the group of Kaitlyn Owens, Bobbi Kennett, Olivia Theall and Chloe Stepanek teamed up to place third with a time of 1:38.30. On the men's side, Thomas Shomper, Alex Sanchez, Clayton Conklin and Ben Scholl clocked in at 1:27.53 to finish fourth in the relay.
Hayden Miller had a hot start in the individual events, notching a B-cut time of 4:43.39 to claim the top spot in the 500 free. Giulia Goerigk followed with a third-place finish in the 200 breast (2:15.09) and later added a second-place time of 2:00.73 in the 200 IM.
Sanchez clocked a B-cut time of 1:56.64 in the 200 breast to take fourth, and Shomper added a B-cut of his own, going 1:43.60 in the 200 back for a third-place finish.
Stepanek added second-place points for the Aggies in the 100 free with a 48.68. Theall tacked on another second-place finish with a time of 1:56.54 in the 200 fly while Katie Walker took the top spot in heat two, clocking in at 1:58.61, which stood as the third-fastest time of the day in the event.
Leonardo Garcia placed second on the 3-meter with an NCAA Zones qualifying score of 376.80, while Mayson Richards added fourth-place points on the 1-meter with a score of 260.05.
The Aggies posted a pair of top-four times in the 200 free relay to close out the day with the women's squad of Stepanek, Theall, Jordan Buechler and Owens taking third (1:30.60) and the men's team of Collin Fuchs, Scholl, Conklin and Baylor Nelson placing fourth (1:18.95).
The Aggies return to action Friday, Sept. 18 for their home opener, a two-day tri-meet with BYU and TCU. Friday's action is set to begin at 4 p.m. and Saturday will start at 9 a.m.
