Aggies Fall to No. 13 Kansas State, 89-50
Dec 08, 2024 | Women's Basketball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M women's basketball team dropped an 89-50 decision to the No. 13 Kansas State Wildcats Sunday inside Reed Arena.
Aicha Coulibaly led the Aggies with 12 points on 4-of-6 (66.7%) shooting from the field and added four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Sahara Jones paced the Maroon & White on the boards with eight rebounds to go with six points.
Texas A&M (5-5) remained in striking distance early in the first quarter, but were doomed by 3-of-14 (21.4%) shooting from the field and six turnovers as the Wildcats mounted a 26-10 lead at the first break.
Kansas State (10-1) opened up a 22-point lead in the first three minutes of the second quarter, but the Aggies closed the gap to 38-23 with a 10-3 run capped by Taliyah Parker's 3-pointer at the 3:18 mark. The Wildcats slowly stretched their lead to 46-25 at the intermission.
Hope of an Aggie comeback was dampened when the Wildcats went on a 17-2 run coming out of the locker room and Kansas State led 63-27 with 4:15 left in the third quarter.
The teams played on an even keel the final quarter, 16-16, with Coulibaly scoring nine points in the period.
The Aggies return to the court Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. inside Reed Arena against Texas Southern.

Head Coach Joni Taylor
On her takeaways from the game...
"We can't give [opposing teams] what they do well, and I think we did that tonight. I thought we did a really good job on [Ayoka] Lee, but other than that they had four players in double figures, and they scored well. I thought we just weren't aggressive enough defensively. We let them score how they want to score, and I didn't think we dictated defensively consistently."
On the lessons learned from the Aggies' non-conference slate...
"I think our non-conference schedule has prepared us very well. We have gone against every type of offense, and we have gone against every type of defense. We now have to learn from all of those experiences and continue to move the needle in the right direction. The most disappointing thing today is I thought we had a great opportunity to compete at a really high level against a team that was really good. At times we did that, and at times we did not. We can't have empty possessions, and we can't let [teams] go down and get what they want on the defensive end."
Redshirt Senior Aicha Coulibaly
On the benefits of playing competitive teams in non-conference ...
"Our [non-conference] games have been tough since we started the season, and that will be something that will help us in the long run. We have a lot to learn as a team, like getting our chemistry back and gelling together, but I feel like this is going to help us a lot. We've played hard games and it's only going to get harder as the SEC starts. We are going to keep moving forward and just do the best we can."
Redshirt Senior Lauren Ware
Thoughts on the game...
"I think they moved well without the ball. We didn't have the best on-ball defense, so they had us scrambling a lot, and I feel like that's why they had as many open threes as they did. It was on us to guard the ball better, so we didn't have as many rotations that caused those 3-pointers."
