Aggies Fight Off Aztecs, 7-5
Feb 16, 2024 | Softball
SAN DIEGO – The No. 25 Texas A&M softball team fought off a late San Diego State comeback, 7-5, Saturday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aggies finished day one of the Campbell/Cartier Classic 2-0 after defeating No. 14 Oregon, 4-1, earlier in the day.
A crooked second inning put Texas A&M (6-0) in the driver's seat taking an early 4-1 lead. After adding one more in the third frame and a pair of runs in the sixth, the Maroon & White took a commanding 7-1 lead into the final inning. Down to their last two outs, San Diego State (3-3) threatened with a three-run home run before Emiley Kennedy entered the circle to force a ground out and fly out to end the game.
The Aggies used all four pitchers to fend off the relentless Aztec attack. Emily Leavitt got the start, before Shaylee Ackerman entered pitching 3.2 innings to earn the win. Kennedy earned the save after coming in relief for Brooke Vestal.
The Maroon & White matched a team high with 11 hits and three doubles, including Julia Cottrill, Allie Enright, Jazmine Hill and Kennedy Powell each recording multiple hits.
