FAYETTEVILLE – The Texas A&M track & field team opens its postseason with the SEC Indoor Championships held at the Randal Tyson Track Center this weekend. The Aggies enter the championships with three conference-leading marks and one national leader.
Lamara Distin leads the conference and nation in the women's high jump, after leaping 1.97m/6-5.5 at the Tiger Paw Invitational. Heather Abadie also holds a league-leading mark in the women's pole vault, as she set a program-record clearance of 4.38m/14-4.5 on her way to the event win at the Razorback Invitational, ranking 13th in the nation in the event. Ja'Qualon Scott paces the conference in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.60, this time also ranks second-fastest in the nation this year.
The Aggies hold another 19 top-25 nationally-ranking marks heading into the weekend, with eight on the men's side and 11 on the women's. Auhmad Robinson (400m), Connor Schulman (60m hurdles), Sam Whitmarsh (800m), Kimar Farquharson (800m), Ushan Perera (high jump) and a trio of 4x400m relay groups make up the remainder of the ranked men. For the women, Semira Killebrew (60m), Camryn Dickson (60m, 200m), Jermaisha Arnold (400m), Bailey Goggans (800m), Jaiya Covington (60m hurdles), Nissi Kabongo (high jump), Joniar Thomas (long jump, pentathlon) and a pair of 4x400m relay quartets all hold top-25 nationally-ranking marks.
Changes to the Maroon & White's record book have occurred at every meet this season, with a total of 40 new entries or improvements in the top-12 ranks. Cooper Cawthra downed the second program record this season in the men's mile, as he became the second Aggie ever to run a sub-four-minute mile after finishing the race in 3:59.05.
At last year's indoor championships, A&M brought home six medals including a pair of golds and four bronze. The two first-place finishes came in the high jumps, as Distin looks to defend her title for a third-successive year, while Perera will push for back-to-back wins. Schulman added a bronze in the men's 60m hurdles, while Tierra Robinson-Jones claimed third in the 400m. Jack Mann III and Zach Davis each garnered a third-place finish as they tied their clearance in the men's pole vault.
