BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 21 Texas A&M women's tennis team kicks off conference play with two home matches at the Mitchell Tennis Center, Friday, March 1, against No. 14 South Carolina and Sunday versus No. 19 Florida. First serves are set for 5 p.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
The Aggies (8-5) are coming off back-to-back undefeated SEC regular season titles, where their record stood at 26-0. A&M starts league play against the 8-1 Gamecocks with their only loss coming from Georgia and will face the 4-5 Gators to wrap up the weekend. The Aggies look to continue their dominance behind the No. 1 player in the nation, Mary Stoiana, No. 19 Nicole Khrin, No. 29 Mia Kupres and the No. 4 ranked doubles pair, Stoiana/Kupres.
Last time out, the Maroon & White topped SMU, 4-1, marking their 47th-straight win at the Mitchell Tennis Center. The Mustangs took the early lead after doubles play, but the Aggies went on to take four-straight singles courts to secure the win. Jeanette Mireles landed the first punch downing Caroline McGinley on court 6. Following suit, No. 1 Stoiana defeated Drew Morris on court 1 and No. 19 Khirin bested Taylor Johnson on court 3. Sealing the deal was, Daria Smetannikov as she captured the win on court 5 versus Maja Makoric.
The Aggies boast an 8-4 overall advantage over South Carolina and look to earn their fifth-straight win over the Gamecocks. Sunday will be the 18th all-time meeting between the Aggies and the Gators. The Maroon & White hold a five-game winning streak against Florida, with the last matchup ending in a 4-2 decision for the Aggies.
