ARLINGTON – Behind a pair of home runs and the arm of Ryan Prager, the No. 4 Texas A&M baseball team improved to 9-0 after defeating Arizona State (5-4), 4-0, in its opening game of the Kubota College Baseball Series Friday night from Globe Life Field.
The shutout marked the fourth of the season for the Aggies, which is their most through the first nine games since 2016.
Prager continued his stellar start to the season, delivering five scoreless frames and striking out eight en route to his third straight win. The lefty has yet to allow a run in 16.2 innings this season for the Maroon & White. In relief, Evan Aschenbeck allowed one hit over four scoreless frames to earn his second save of the season. The senior also registered four punchouts on the night.
The Aggies struck first in the opening frame behind the barrel of Braden Montgomery, who delivered his fourth home run of the season. After Gavin Grahovac and Jace LaViolette led off the frame with a pair of walks, Montgomery turned on an 0-2 pitch and sent it over the wall in left center for a three-run opposite field homer.
After making a highlight reel catch to end the top half of the second, Caden Sorrell padded the lead, 4-0, in the third with a solo shot over the outstretched arm of the Sun Devil left fielder. The long ball marked the first of the freshman's career.
The four runs were all the duo of Prager and Aschenbeck needed as they allowed only one Arizona State batter to reach second base on the night.
Inside the Box Score
The Maroon & White continue the Kubota College Baseball Series tomorrow with a matchup against USC at 2 p.m.
