No. 12 Men’s Tennis Extends SEC Winning Streak to Five
Mar 17, 2024 | Men's Tennis
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 12 Texas A&M men's tennis team extended their SEC win streak to five after beating Georgia, 5-2, for the second time this season, Sunday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
"It was nice to see our guys face adversity today," head coach Steve Denton said. "Being down 2-0 and then having the confidence in each other to keep on fighting back. We were able to turn some matches back in our favor. The team is beginning to show some maturity which is what we as coaches are looking for."
The Aggies (16-4, 5-1 SEC) got off to a slow start after losses on courts 1 and 2 in doubles play to go down 1-0 heading into singles action.
The Bulldogs (7-9, 1-4 SEC) extend the lead with a win on court 6, but the Maroon & White responded with a ranked victory from No. 116 Giulio Perego on court 4 over No. 100 Miguel Perez Pena (6-1, 7-5) to make the score 2-1 in favor of Mississippi State. No. 64 JC Roddick tied it up, earning his seventh ranked victory of the season against No. 82 Thomas Paulsell on court 2 (6-3, 7-5). Roddick has earned three ranked wins this week and has a perfect 4-0 record.
No. 36 Raphael Perot claimed the lead for the Aggies, coming back from behind to take down No. 65 Ryan Colby on court 1 (2-6, 6-2, 6-3). Clinching the match for the Maroon & White was Tiago Pires who beat Cyrus Mahjoob in a three-set thriller on court 5 (7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-2).
The teams played out the remaining match where No. 118 Togan Tokac rallied from behind to secure the last victory of the day for the Aggies on court 3 against Niels Ratiu (6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-4) to seal the 5-2 triumph.
The evening match versus UTA got cancelled due to weather.
Texas A&M returns to action, traveling to Lexington to take on the No. 6 Kentucky Wildcats Friday, March 22.
