TUSCALOOSA – The No. 11 Texas A&M men's tennis team fell to the No. 22 Alabama Crimson Tide, 4-3, Sunday at the Alabama Tennis Center.
"It was a tough loss for our team today," head coach Steve Denton said. "It's been a difficult stretch for us in the last couple of weeks. Adversity only makes you stronger if you embrace it. We will find out what we are made of next week in the SEC Tournament. There are a lot of fighters in that locker room, and we will need to figure it out. We all have to do a better job.
The Maroon & White (18-9, 7-5 SEC) got off to a hot start in doubles play against the Crimson Tide (17-11, 6-6 SEC) with Raphael Perot/Tiago Pires getting a dominant win over Matic Dimic/Roan Jones on court 3, 6-3. Clinching doubles for the Aggies were No. 15 Giulio Perego/Togan Tokac who took down No. 53 Filip Planinsek/Andrii Zimnokh on court 1, 6-3.
Alabama responded with a win on court 3 to open singles play. Tokac got the lead back for A&M, winning in straight sets over No. 101 Enzo Aguiard on court 4 (6-0, 7-5). The Crimson Tide evened the score again with a victory on court 6. Then, No. 37 JC Roddick beat No. 117 Zimnokh on court 2 in a three-set thriller (6-1, 2-6, 6-3) to make the score 3-2, see-sawing the match back in favor of the Aggies. However, the Crimson Tide earned wins on courts 1 and 5 to clinch the victory.
The Aggies travel to Baton Rouge April 17-21 for the SEC Tournament and will play the winner of the LSU-Ole Miss matchup on Thursday.
