NEW ORLEANS – Texas A&M track & field head coach Pat Henry won the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Central Region Men's Coach of the Year honor, while Sam Whitmarsh won the region's Men's Track Athlete of the Year award, the organization announced Friday.
Henry just concluded his 20th season at the helm of the Maroon & White, securing a fifth-place finish at the men's NCAA Outdoor Championships and third at the conference meet. At outdoor nationals, his 4x400m relay group consisting of Jevon O'Bryant, Cutler Zamzow, Kimar Farquharson and Auhmad Robinson won the national title in the event with a time of 2:58.37, that mark broke the A&M school record, leads the world this year and ranks as the fifth-fastest time in NCAA history. His men's group also claimed five medals at the SEC Championships, including a pair of titles from Whitmarsh in the 800m and Victor Kibiego in the 3,000m steeplechase.
Whitmarsh put the nation on notice throughout the outdoor season. The Lake Jackson, Texas, native ran the seventh-quickest time in NCAA history in the 800m at the Battle on the Bayou, crossing the line in 1:44.46. His time in Baton Rouge secured him a spot on The Bowerman Watch List for the first time in his career and that mark remained as the fastest time in the NCAA at the end of the season. Whitmarsh's performances continued to standout, as he claimed gold in the 800m at the SEC Championships, completing the sweep of the indoor and outdoor titles. He was also a member of the 4x800m Penn Relays winning group, anchoring the team with a staggering 1:45.02 split to win the first title in the event in program history. The junior concluded his collegiate season at the NCAA Championships, where he secured First Team All-America honors with a second-place finish in the 800m final.
