BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M baseball team landed a nation-best five student-athletes on the 2024 D1Baseball All-America teams, as announced by the outlet Wednesday.
This marks the fourth time this season the Aggies have garnered four or more All-America honors from a major outlet.
Relief pitcher Evan Aschenbeck and outfielder Jace LaViolette picked up first team honors, while outfielder Braden Montgomery and starter Ryan Prager were named to the second team. Reliever Chris Cortez rounded the All-Americans for the Maroon & White as the junior earned a spot on the third team.
The selections marked the fifth of the year for both Aschenbeck and Montgomery, making them the first unanimous All-Americans in program history since Braden Shewmake in 2017.
Aschenbeck, the NCBWA Stopper of the Year, was brilliant in 32 relief appearances this season for the Maroon & White. The lefty recorded a 6-1 record to go along with 10 saves and a 1.78 ERA. In 75.2 innings of work, Aschenbeck recorded 87 strikeouts to only 12 walks and held opponents to a .198 batting average.
Of his 32 appearances, 28 were for multiple innings and 21 were scoreless outings.
For LaViolette, the All-America selection marked his fourth of the season and third first team honor. The lefty compiled a monster sophomore campaign that saw him belt 29 homers, drive in 78 runs and bat .305. The outfielder's 29 homers were the second most in program history and upped his career total to 50, which is tied for second all-time in program history. LaViolette also crossed home plate 87 times, which marks the second most in school annals.
In 68 games, the sophomore registered 22 multi-hit, 20 multi-RBI and six multi-homer performances. The lefty slugger also finished the season with a career-best 25-game on-base streak.
Prior to a season-ending injury, Montgomery started 61 games for the Aggies and logged a .322/.454/.733 slash line. The switch-hitter belted 27 homers and drove in an SEC-best 85 RBI to go along with 14 doubles and a triple. The junior also led Texas A&M with 25 multi-hit and 25 multi-RBI performances.
In 19 starts this season for the Maroon & White, Prager compiled a 9-1 record to go along with a 2.95 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. In 97.2 innings of work, the lefty punched out 124 batters, which are the ninth-most in a single season in program history, and held opponents to a .226 batting average. The redshirt sophomore also tossed nine quality starts and logged seven scoreless outings.
In a 5-1 win over Kentucky at the College World Series, the lefty carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, marking the second longest no-hit bid in College World Series history at Charles Schwab Field.
Cortez picked up All-America honors for the first time in his career after logging a 10-3 record and a 2.78 ERA in 25 appearances. The flame-throwing righty struck out a whopping 102 batters in 64.2 innings of work and held opposing batters to a .187 average.
