Aug 29, 2024 | Volleyball
MOBILE, Ala. – The Texas A&M volleyball team opens its 2024 campaign at the Jaguar Invitational where it will face hosts South Alabama and McNeese at the Jaguar Gym August 30 and 31, respectively.
The Aggies enter the 2024 season following an outstanding first year under head coach Jamie Morrison, as he led the program back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in five seasons. The team opened the year with the third-best start in program history, winning seven-straight matches. A&M showed early on in conference play they could battle with the best, claiming its highest-ranked win in 24 years after besting No. 4 Florida on the road in a five-set thriller. The team's season concluded in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, wrapping the year with a 16-13 record.
A&M opens the fall with a pair of competitive opponents at the Jaguar Invitational, as the Maroon & White face the hosts South Alabama who also reached the NCAA Tournament last season, falling to Georgia Tech in the first round. The teams have met once in their history, with A&M winning in a neutral site during the 1982 season. The following day the Aggies battle McNeese, who they hold a 2-0 record over with the most recent victory coming in 2006.
With eyes set on taking the next step this season, the Maroon & White added six new faces to the 2024 roster. Five players transferred into the program, including outside hitters Emily Hellmuth and Taylor Humphrey, liberos Ellee Stinson and Tatum Thomas and setter Maddie Waak. Rounding out the incoming group is freshman outside Amaré Hernandez who joins the team from McAllen, Texas.
Two stars of the A&M junior class, Logan Lednicky and Ifenna Cos-Okpalla, were named to the 2024 Preseason All-SEC Team following standout sophomore seasons. Lednicky was selected to the All-SEC Team for the second-consecutive season after another productive year, pacing the Maroon & White in kills (340) and kills per set (3.24). Cos-Okpalla put the nation on notice, leading the country in blocks per set (1.62) while logging 151 total blocks on the year and breaking the school record for blocks in a three-set match with 14. The duo was also named to the 2024 Collegiate National Team, spending part of their summer training with the U.S. Olympic Women's Volleyball Team prior to the Games in Paris.
Coach Morrison also took to the international stage during the summer, leading the Women's U19 National Team to its third-straight gold-medal winning performance with victory at the NORCECA Championships in Honduras. Morrisons' group won all five of its matches, dropping only one set throughout the tournament and downing Canada in the final to ensure gold (3-1).
