MADISON – The Texas A&M volleyball team dropped its first match of the season to No. 7 Wisconsin Saturday evening in the UW Field House, 3-0 (25-18, 30-28, 25-19).
The Aggies (8-1) undefeated run came to an end in a competitive three-set battle with Wisconsin (6-3). A&M went toe-to-toe with the Badgers offensively, recording 44 kills to the Badgers 46. Logan Lednicky led the Maroon & White with a match-high 15 kills on the night while hitting an efficient .353 percent, marking her sixth time this season hitting .350+.
Opening the match with back-and-forth volleyball, the teams were knotted early at five. Wisconsin found some momentum, prompting a timeout from head coach Jamie Morrison (12-6). A&M responded with an 8-5 streak of its own, shrinking the Badgers lead to three and forcing them to burn their first timeout of the set (14-17). Wisconsin regained its rhythm and closed out the opener, 25-18.
The beginning of the second frame once again saw the team's trading points, with the Badgers holding a one-point advantage at the media timeout, 15-14. Wisconsin created some separation; however, a three-point Aggie run knotted the teams at 22. The frame went into extras, and despite a strong battle from the Maroon & white, Wisconsin doubled its lead (30-28), 2-0.
The third was a story of runs, with A&M jumping out early (6-3) followed by an answer from the Badgers as they led at the midway point of the frame, 15-14. Wisconsin created separation, winning the frame (25-19) and match, 3-0.
COACH'S QUOTES
Head coach Jamie Morrison on tonight's match …
"Wisconsin is a great volleyball team and it's a great environment for us to play in. I'm excited about how we played for stretches. Obviously, you're never happy with a loss, but I'm happy with the path we're on."
Morrison on the battle in the second set …
"I think good volleyball teams are able to play for long stretches of time. I thought that second set might have been some of the best volleyball we've played all year. We played big in a big moment when the score was tight in a hostile environment and I'm proud of that."
