Jan 10, 2025 | Men's Basketball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – It will be the first-ever men's basketball top 10 matchup in College Station when the No. 10 Aggies host the No. 5 Alabama Crimson Tide in a 7 p.m. battle at Reed Arena on Saturday.
STATISTICAL COMPARISON
NEED-TO-KNOWS
TOP 10 MATCHUP IN AGGIELAND: Saturday's game represents the first-ever top 10 men's basketball matchup in College Station.
SUCCESS VS. AP TOP 25: Since March of 2022, the Aggies have posted a 14-9 record against ranked teams, which is the sixth-most wins among all D1 teams in that span. The 60.9 win% ranks No. 7 among D1 teams with 20 or more games vs. ranked foes.
The Aggies' 80-78 road win over No. 17 Oklahoma on Wednesday was the team's fourth win over an AP Top 25 opponent in four opportunities in 2024-25.
STREAKING: The Aggies have won nine straight games, which is the team's longest since the 2015-16 SEC Champions had a 10-win streak.
The Aggies' win streak is tied for the third-longest in D1, behind only UC San Diego (12) and Iowa State (10).
TOP 10: At No. 10/9, the Aggies are in the AP and coaches top 10 for the first time since late December 2017 when they were ranked No. 5 AP/No. 6 coaches.
OFFENSE ON UPSWING: Although ranked last in the SEC and in the 250s in D1 in FG% (43.4%), the Aggies have hit 44.0 or higher in five straight games.
JUST WEIRD: For the first time since the start of the 2022-23 season, someone not named Wade Taylor IV is the Aggies' leading scorer. Zhuric Phelps' epic 34-point outburst vs. OU gave him the lead, 207-204.
LIMITING FGS ALLOWED: Texas A&M and Tennessee are the only SEC schools that haven't allowed more than 28 FGM in a game this season. The two teams are No. 1 and No. 2 in FGM defense at 20.2 (UT) and 21.3 (TAMU).
GETTING SECOND CHANCES: Texas A&M pounds the offensive glass for a NCAA-best 16.7 offensive rebounds/G in 2024-25.
Eighteen SEC players have reeled in 32+ offensive rebounds - the Aggies have four of them. No other school has more than two.
BOARDS ADVANTAGE: A&M has been out-rebounded just once this season and own a 11.1/G rebound margin for the season (No. 6 nationally).
BENCH IMPACT: The bench has been instrumental to its 13-2 record with a 48.5 FG% and an average of 31.1 points/game. Pharrel Payne is the top bench scorer at 9.4 points/G. Since the start of December, Payne is shooting an NCAA-best 84.4% from the field (among players with at 30 FGA).
TOP 10 SUCCESS AT REED
Texas A&M has won its last three games against AP top 10 teams at Reed Arena - beating No. 6 Kentucky (97-92 OT) and No. 6 Tennessee (85-69) last season and No. 2 Alabama (67-61) in the 2023 regular season finale.
AGGIES VS. AP TOP 25
