Aggies Open ITA National Indoors Versus Rival Longhorns
Feb 13, 2025 | Men's Tennis
DALLAS – The No. 14 Texas A&M men's tennis team will face the No. 3 Texas Longhorns in the opening round of the ITA National Indoor Team Championship, with first serve set for 12 p.m. on Friday at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex on SMU's campus.
"Our team is super excited to be in this prestigious field and test ourselves against some of the best teams in the country," head coach Steve Denton said. "Texas presents a severe challenge to our team tomorrow. Not only are we playing them as new members of the SEC, but also as our in-state rival. After playing them in the Super Regional last season, we know that we will need to be razor sharp against them. Anytime Texas and Texas A&M get together it is a special occasion. I know our team is excited for this opportunity."
This will be the first meeting of the two teams since the Longhorns followed the Aggies to the SEC, but the two teams were longtime conference rivals in the Southwest and Big 12 Conferences. The teams played as recently as last season when the Longhorns knocked off the Aggies in the NCAA Super Regional in Austin.
Texas A&M is 3-2 this season and is looking to rebound from its two-game losing streak. After securing two tough-fought 4-3 victories over UCLA and host Harvard to qualify for Indoors in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Aggies have been looking to get back into the win column after road losses at Pepperdine and Ohio State.
Texas (7-1) secured its spot in this weekend's tournament after claiming two 4-0 wins against Rice and Georgia Tech in Austin. The Longhorns only loss of the season came on the road against No. 5 Virginia, 4-3.
