No. 1 Aggies Open Earley Era with 4-2 Win over Elon
Feb 14, 2025 | Baseball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 1 Texas A&M baseball team picked up the first win of the Michael Earley era Friday night, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Elon, 4-2, in front of 8,013 rowdy fans at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park. The attendance marked the largest Opening Day crowd in program history and the second largest since 2012.
Reliever Weston Moss earned the win after tossing two scoreless innings, while newcomer Clayton Freshcorn recorded a four-out save to seal the victory. Starter Ryan Prager earned a no-decision despite throwing five scoreless frames to go along with eight strikeouts. With the performance, the Aggie ace became the first Maroon & White starter to record a scoreless outing on Opening Day in consecutive seasons since at least 2000.
First baseman Blake Binderup led the way offensively for the Aggies (1-0) as the redshirt sophomore finished 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored. With the long ball, Binderup became the first Texas A&M player to homer on Opening Day in back-to-back seasons since at least 2000.
Following Prager's departure, the Phoenix (0-1) struck for a pair of runs in the sixth behind a two-run double to left center. The first run of the frame was unearned due to catcher's interference by the Maroon & White.
The Aggies delivered a quick response in the third as back-to-back bases-loaded walks by Kaeden Kent and Terrence Kiel II evened the score at 2-2. A wild pitch during the next at-bat allowed Binderup to race home, putting the Maroon & White in front for good, 3-2.
The redshirt sophomore tacked on insurance in the eighth with a solo shot to right that traveled 365 feet and left the bat at 102 mph.
Elon brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth following a leadoff walk but Freshcorn retired the next three batters he faced to close out the 4-2 victory.
Inside the Box Score
The Aggies will look to clinch their first series win of the season Saturday afternoon as game two is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Blue Bell Park.
