LaViolette Homers Twice, No. 1 Aggies Run-Rule Elon, 16-6
Feb 15, 2025 | Baseball
With the win, the Aggies (2-0) secured their first series win of 2025 and have won 32 consecutive games against non-conference opponents.
LaViolette finished the day 2-for-4 at the dish and crossed the plate three times to lead the offensive attack. Designated hitter Hayden Schott followed with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate to go along with a homer and three RBI. Gavin Grahovac (2-for-4), Gavin Kash (2-for-4), Kaeden Kent (2-for-3) and Terrence Kiel II (2-for-4) also registered multi-hit performances on the day for the Maroon & White.
On the mound, reliever Isaac Morton picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings and striking out three. Starter Justin Lamkin earned a no-decision after allowing three runs on six hits in four innings of work. The junior also punched out a game-high nine batters on the afternoon.
After the Phoenix struck for a pair in the opening frame, the Aggies responded with a three-spot behind the bats of LaViolette and Schott in the bottom half. LaViolette deposited his first homer of the season over the right field wall on a 1-0 count, while Schott followed two batters later with a two-run, 415-foot blast to center to put the Maroon & White in front 3-2.
Elon responded right back in the second as they pushed across the tying run on a sacrifice fly. In the third, the Aggies broke through for four runs to jump back in front 7-3. Blake Binderup recorded the first tally of the frame with a bases-loaded RBI walk, while a wild pitch to the next batter allowed LaViolette to score from third. Kiel II tacked on the final two runs of the frame with a single to right, marking the first hit of the rookie's collegiate career.
Grahovac added to the lead, 8-3, in the fifth with a solo shot to Section 12 in right center. The sophomore's first long ball of the season left the bat at 100 mph and traveled 390 feet.
Following a three-run fifth by the Phoenix, which was aided by a pair of Aggie errors, Texas A&M responded with four in the bottom half to stretch the lead to 12-6. Grahovac drew a bases-loaded RBI walk and Wyatt Henseler followed with a hit-by-pitch to push across the Maroon & White's 10th run of the game. Schott then ripped a single to left that was booted by the fielder, allowing two more Aggie runs to cross the plate.
In the sixth, Texas A&M loaded the bases for the ninth time on the afternoon to bring up LaViolette. The junior blasted the Aggies' first grand slam of the season 420 feet to straightaway center to extend the advantage to 16-6. LaViolette's second home run of the day left the bat at 107 mph and marked the 11th multi-homer game of his career.
Despite allowing a pair of runners to reach base in the seventh, Morton struck out Tank Yaghoubi looking to finish off the run-rule victory.
