Softball Hosts Texas A&M Invitational
Feb 26, 2025 | Softball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – After consecutive weekend business trips in Florida, the No. 5 Aggie softball team returns to Davis Diamond to host the Texas A&M Invitational beginning Thursday at 4:30 p.m. against Texas State, followed by Princeton at 7 p.m.
The Maroon & White continue action on Friday against George Washington at 7 p.m., followed by a top 15 matchup with No. 13 Texas Tech Saturday at 7 p.m. before wrapping up the weekend on Sunday against Idaho State at 11:30 a.m. and Texas Tech at 2 p.m.
TURN UP ON TWO-OUTS
Nearly 40% (51-of-125) of Texas A&M's run production this season has come on two-outs, while when facing top 25 opponents 63% (20-of-32) of the runs have come with one out remaining. Mac Barbara has led the party with two outs. The graduate is 5-for-8 at the dish with 11 RBI, two home runs and one double with runners in scoring position and two outs. Freshman KK Dement has taken notes as she's hitting .438 (7-for-16) with eight RBI, two round trippers and one double with runners on base and two outs. Most recently, the Aggies overwhelmed No. 8 Florida State on the road sparking a comeback scoring all six runs on two outs in a 6-3 game one double header win in extra innings. Ol' Sarge's charges didn't stop there as they scored eight of 11 runs in game two to sweep the Seminoles 11-4. It marked the first doubleheader sweep on the road against a top 10 opponent in program history.
MYA PEREZ EARNS SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mya Perez earned her first career SEC weekly honor after she was named the SEC Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 24. The sophomore went 9-for-17 at the JoAnne Graf Classic, including three home runs, one double and 11 RBI, while walking four times and striking out only twice finishing the weekend with a 1.754 OPS. Perez has homered three times in her previous four games and leads the team in hits (20), RBI (27) and home runs (4), while boasting a slash line .444/.574/.778.
NINETEEN FOR LESSENTINE
Freshman pitcher Sydney Lessentine set a program record 19 strikeouts against the 25 batters she faced in 11-2 win over Florida A&M on Feb. 21. Lessentine's 19 punchies are the most in the NCAA this season in a seven-inning game, while being only one of three pitchers in the nation this season to have registered 15-plus strikeouts in a seven-inning game and the only freshman to do so. The rookie carried a no-hitter through 4.2 innings of work before the Rattlers strung together back-to-back hits in which she followed fanning the next 10 batters, including four leaving the bat on their shoulders.
BUILT FORD TOUGH
Texas A&M head coach Trisha Ford is quickly approaching win No. 100 in the Maroon & White and career win No. 500 is not too far behind. The fifteen-year head coaching veteran boasts a 491-263-1 record, while she is 94-37 in Aggieland.
TEXAS A&M INVITATIONAL PREVIEW
The Texas A&M Invitational features two regional teams in No. 13 Texas Tech (15-3) and Texas State (10-3), while George Washington (7-3), Idaho State (10-3) and Princeton (2-2) join in making the trip to the Brazos Valley. Familiar faces will be showing up to Davis Diamond highlighted by Alumni Weekend as former Texas A&M softball players will be recognized prior to the Texas Tech game Saturday night. George Washington features a familiar face in Allison Heffley, the daughter of current assistant coach Russ Heffley, while Idaho State head coach Andrew Rich was a graduate assistant under Texas A&M head coach Trisha Ford.
