Aggies Open ITA Indoor Championships Against Host Illinois

URBANA, Ill. – The No. 2 Texas A&M women's tennis team battles host Illinois in Friday's opening round of the ITA National Indoor Team Championship at 6:30 p.m.
The road to winning their first ITA Indoors title would include a second-round match Saturday against Oklahoma State or Texas at Atkins Tennis Center. LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma and UCLA are also on Texas A&M's side of the 16-team bracket. Teams advancing through the first two rounds head to Evanston, Illinois, for the semifinal and championship rounds Monday and Tuesday.
The Aggies (5-0) earned their spot in the championships with 4-0 blankings of USF and TCU in ITA Kickoff Weekend action. Texas A&M has dropped just one point on the season, outscoring foes 28-1.
The Maroon & White boast five players in the ITA Top 125, highlighted by No. 3 Mary Stoiana, who holds a team-high eight ranked wins. Nicole Khirin moved up three spots in the latest rankings and now claims the No. 12 spot. Khirin is second on the team in ranked wins with six.
The Aggies added two players to the singles top-125 in the latest rankings (Feb. 5), with Lucciana Perez securing the No. 41 spot and Mia Kupres at No. 101. Rounding out the rankings is Daria Smetannikov, who leads the team in total victories with 19, at No. 125.
In doubles, the 2024 All-American duo of Kupres and Stoiana picked up their first ranked victory of the season in their first match versus TCU's No. 12 Jade Otway/Isabel Pascual, making their way into the rankings at the No. 42 position.
The Maroon & White have faced Illinois on three occasions with the Fighting Illini owning a 2-1 advantage. They last played in 2020 with the Aggies winning 4-1 at Mitchell Tennis Center.
Illinois claimed an automatic spot in the ITA Indoors as tournament co-host. The Illini are 2-2 on the season with wins against Northwestern (4-2) and Colorado (4-2) and losses against Notre Dame (4-2) and Georgia Tech (4-3).
Illinois boasts two ranked doubles squads, with Megan Heuser/Kida Ferrari at No. 61 and Heuser/Alice Xu at No. 89.
