Aggies Impress on Opening Day of Charlie Thomas Invitational

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M track & field team put out a strong showing on the opening day of the Charlie Thomas invitational Friday at the R.A. 'Murray' Fasken '38 Indoor Track & Field facility.
The Aggies set the tone for the weekend with a strong first days showing in their final indoor regular season home meet. The group captured one event title, two all-time marks, punched nine semifinals tickets and added 19 personal-best performances, as they head into the second day of the Charlie Thomas Invitational.
A&M opened the day with the multi's, as the women's group competed in its first pentathlon of the season. Sofia Yakushina led the group with an all-time performance, racking up 4,234 points to finish as the top collegiate in the event and rank third on the A&M all-time performers list. The freshman won both the long jump (6.07m/19-11) and 800m (2:14.49) events, while finishing third in the 60m hurdles (8.46) and seventh in both the shot put (11.54m/37-10.5) and high jump (1.66m/5-5.25). Madison Murray also put on an all-time display, accumulating a personal-best total of 3,847 points to rank ninth in the history books in her A&M pentathlon debut.
Blake Harris was the lone Aggie in the men's heptathlon, and after the first four events he sits in fifth overall and third among collegiates with 3,042 points. The junior placed second in the 60m (6.94), sixth in both the long jump (6.85m/22-5.75) and high jump (1.92m/6-3.5) and ninth in the shot put (12.37m/40-7).
Continuing the momentum for the day were the 60m groups, as four women and three men punched their tickets to tomorrow's semifinals. On the women's side, Camryn Dickson spearheaded the group with a season-best time of 7.30, she was followed by Jasmine Montgomery in second (7.38), Bria Bullard in third (7.38) and Elnita Green wrapped up the advancing women with a personal-best time of 7.62 to place 16th. DeVante Mount led the men with a mark of 6.71 for third, while Keanu Jones and Ernest Campbell were right behind in sixth (6.76) and eighth (6.81), respectively.
The dynamic hurdle duo of Jaiya Covington and Ja'Qualon Scott both advanced out of the 60m hurdles prelims as the top qualifiers in the women's and men's events, respectively. Covington crossed the line in a meet-record time of 8.04, while Scott finished in 7.69 to secure his semifinal spot.
The men's pole vault quartet of Leo Bowen, Ryley Klefstad, Nico Signorelli and Jack Mann III had an impressive outing as all four placed in the top eight. Bowen was the highest finisher in fourth with an indoor-best clearance of 5.23m/17-1.75, Klefstad followed in fifth with an identical mark (5.23m/17-1.75), Signorelli was sixth with a personal-best mark of 5.08m/16-8 and Mann rounded out the contingent also with a 5.08/16-8 mark.
Shewaye Johnson captured the Maroon & White's sole event title of the day, as the sophomore ran a career-best mark of 16:53.15 in the 5,000m. Nicole Chastain also grabbed a podium finish, placing third in 17:16.09. On the men's side, a late kick pushed Aiden Gonzalez-Rodiles up the leaderboard to second with a time of 14:36.42, while Noah Willows ran a 14 second best crossing the line fourth in 14:38.05.
Flipping back to the field, the long jump duo of Khybah Dawson and Mason Mangum logged a five-six finish, respectively, as Dawson leaped 7.47m/24-6.25 and Mangum soared 7.30m/23-11.5.
The 200m group wrapped up the meet, as A&M claimed four top-10 finishes with two from the women and two from the men. Latasha Smith added to the day's personal-best list with a time of 23.87 to place sixth while being followed by Yierra Flemings in ninth (24.21). Mangum also stood out on the track running sub-21 seconds for the first time in his career, crossing the line in 20.99 for second. Cutler Zamzow rounded out the top-10 finishes, placing seventh in a career best 21.23.
