Aggies Fall to No. 16 Vanderbilt
Mar 16, 2025 | Women's Tennis
NASHVILLE – The No. 2 Texas A&M women's tennis team dropped its first SEC match of the season versus No. 16 Vanderbilt, 5-2, Sunday at the Currey Tennis Center.
The Aggies (15-2, 6-1 SEC) struck first, securing the doubles point after wins on courts 2 and 3. No. 68 Mia Kupres/Daria Smetannikov dominated in a 6-1 triumph over Bridget Stammel/Sonya Macavei. Nicole Khirin/Lexington Reed finished shortly after with a 6-3 win versus Valeria Ray/Trinetra Vijayakumar to secure the point.
Due to weather, the match was moved indoors during the first set of singles, marking the third-consecutive match the Maroon & White have finished indoors because of weather conditions.
The Commodores responded in singles, claiming the first two points on courts 2 and 3. No. 57 Lucciana Perez stepped up on court 4 and evened the score at 2-2, defeating Vijayakumar 6-3, 6(3)-7, 6-3 for her 15th win of the season and seventh straight.
Vanderbilt (12-3, 5-2 SEC) answered with another win on court 1 to take a 3-2 lead, leaving the match up to courts 5 and 6. No. 62 Smetannikov and Reed dropped their first set, but were able to claw back in the second to set up a dramatic finish.
Reed went down 2-5 in her final set versus Amy Stevens but rallied back with three straight wins to knot the score at 5-5. The pair split wins to send the match to a super-tiebreaker, where Stevens outlasted Reed to clinch the win for Vanderbilt.
Texas A&M returns to Aggieland to face Ole Miss on Friday, March 21 at 5 p.m. at the Mitchell Tennis Center.

On the match…
"It was a battle to the bitter end. A lot of things were thrown at us going into the match, from the weather, rough travel conditions, not getting the proper practice and preparation for the match and then moving from outdoors to indoors – those are all a bit of excuses but definitely played into the match. Credit to Vanderbilt, they played the bigger points a bit better than we did. I'm proud of our girls for the fight. We almost turned the match around there."
On the important of big points…
"We really fought hard. Competitions between the best teams in the nation often come down to who wins the big points, and Vanderbilt came up with the big shots when they needed to. We had a lot of set points and were in several positions with match points that we didn't close the door on, and when you're playing against the best teams in the nation, especially on the road, it will eventually catch up with you. The Aggies will come back stronger, and we'll find ways to fuel us to find another level."
