No. 3 Aggies Escape No. 6 Tigers, 9-7, to Secure Fourth SEC Series Win
Apr 12, 2025 | Softball
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION – The No. 3 Texas A&M softball team held off the No. 6 LSU Tigers, 9-7, to clinch a top 10 series Saturday afternoon at Davis Diamond.
Kennedy Powell led off via hit-by-pitch and stole second as Texas A&M quickly had a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the first. After a swinging strikeout, the Tigers walked Mya Perez, Mac Barbara, Allie Enright and KK Dement to gift the Aggies a 2-0 lead. Following a flyout, Olivia Johnson was the fifth batter of the inning to earn a walk as Barbara made it a 3-0 game. Kramer Eschete doubled the lead with a bases-clearing 3-RBI double to left field to score Enright, Dement and Johnson. Powell added to the Aggie advantage with an RBI single to left center to score Eschete as Texas A&M led 7-0 after the opening frame.
After a scoreless second inning, LSU trimmed the deficit down to two runs, 7-5, scoring five runs on three hits and one error, including a grand slam with one out in the third inning. Kate Munnerlyn entered the circle and sat down the first four batters she faced before yielding her first hit, while she followed with a strikeout to end the top of the fourth. The Maroon & White added an insurance run in the bottom half after Barbara lined an RBI single to left center to score Amari Harper after she got on base via walk.
The Tigers continued to fight back after an LSU runner crossed home on a passed ball and scored another on a sacrifice fly as the Aggies held on to a one-run lead in the top of the fifth. The Aggies were sat down in order in the bottom half clinging on to an 8-7 lead through five innings of action.
Powell was hit-by-pitch for the second time on the day to lead off the sixth frame, while Perez followed with her fourth walk as A&M had runners on first and second with one out. Barbara bounced a chopper to the second baseman who flipped it to the shortstop, while Powell sped around third as Barbara outhustled a double play attempt to score Powell who slid safely to beat the throw.
After entering in the fifth, Emiley Kennedy kept the Tigers in check sitting down the first three batters she faced. The left-handed pitcher held on to a two-run lead heading to the final frame and slammed the door shut with a strikeout, fly out and line out for her second win of the series.
